While Jimin reads him the instructions, Kook tries to put together the "Ghost detecting machine" and make sure all the settings are perfect. When his neighbor offered to help him he didn't think it would be as supportive. He pretty much did half the work.- Do you think it'll work, Kook?
- There's only one way to find out. If it doesn't then I'll buy another one. I know Tae is here somewhere.
- You know, I did some research. I think I know why you can only hear him for a second before his voice fades
- Really? My theory was that ghosts have a bad signal
- Hahahaha well, from what I read it's because we're not exactly in the same place. Think of it like...like a parallel universe. Looks the same but we live here and they live there. Our worlds can cross for a moment. But not for long. Just enough to-
- Hear a phrase or read a line on his diary? I know... I'm kind of hoping I can see him longer than that.
Jungkook tries not to lose hope. His new friend's data isn't really helping him feel better. What if he never gets to talk to him again? He can't accept it's over, there has to be a way.
- Hey Jimin...do you think he can't see me either? Is he as confused as me?
- Most ghosts can see everything. They go from one dimension to the other if they're smart enough
That's unfair. Jungkook wants the power to do the same. And if that's true why isn't Taehyung constantly present? The young boy can't help to think about it over and over again. What can he do to bring him back? To hug him again? To talk...
They turn the machine on and keep the manual close to know what each of it's lights mean. But for now, there's nothing there. Not even one signal. That doesn't mean they give up. They just have to wait for the right moment.
Hours pass by where they pretty much stare into the little screen. They spend most of the time talking about their lives but when the night is falling it's hard to stay awake. Jimin takes over his couch to sleep. Not intentionally, he was just closing his eyes for a few seconds that turned out to be minutes.
Suddenly, when Jungkook feels his eyelids close on their own a sound makes him jump in place. The bipping sound of the machine is finally showing something. Leaving Jimin behind, he follows the instructions that lead him to walk towards where the signal is coming from. His very own room.
- It's working! I knew you were here!
He opens the door slowly and the lights are off. He can't see anyone but by the shape of his sheets and blankets he can tell there's someone on his bed.
- You're there, right Tae? You can see me, can't you?
Nothing on his bed moves so he gets closer very slowly. With extreme care, he gets on the bed and stretches his arm trying to touch something. But there's nothing but air.
- Tae...please...let me see you...
It takes a few seconds. But he can finally live the moment he's been waiting for all these past few months. He can see his best friend with his eyes closed, peacefully resting on his bed.
- Of all the times I had to find you, it had to be when you were sleeping...
Jungkook doesn't dare to look away or wake him up. The image fades for moments and then comes back. It really feels like a world with a bad signal. He wonders what would happen if he got a little closer. Can Tae feel the warmth of his body? He hopes so, because he can feel it in his body and his heart.
For the first time in months, Jungkook falls asleep with a smile on his face. He finally made some advance. He finally got to see those pretty features he fell in love with. He's been so scared of losing him completely. Of forgetting what his voice sounded like, what his face looked like when sleeping, how being with him felt...
Once more like every night, he dreams about him. About the first night in this apartment. When they didn't even had a table yet because they had to buy the furniture.
- There's two bedrooms, so we can-
- I'll take the big one!
- Kookie! I didn't even finish the sentence!
- Wanna play rock, paper, scissors for it?
- Do you play that game for every single decision you do in your life?
-....Maybe.
- Hahahaha okay but it's not necessary now. I have no problem sleeping on the other one, the window is smaller so I get more privacy!
Jungkook helped him move some boxes to his room. But when the night finally came and the younger was ready to sleep on the mattress he threw on the floor, Tae knocked on his door.
- Uhmm...can I sleep here tonight?
- Told you we should've played rock paper scissors
- It's not because I want the room, it's just...ugh, I got lazy and didn't unpack anything.
- So? Did you put the boxes over your mattress or something?
- No but I have no fucking idea which of them has the blankets and even though I like that room... it's cold as fuck
Tae looked away slightly embarrassed. He wasn't asking Jungkook to exchange rooms. He was asking to share the bed for the night. And that's exactly what they did. It became a habit to do it whenever the weather was too cold. Even after Tae found the blankets, they kept doing it.
They slept all those nights in each other's arms, feeling complete and warm. Dying to kiss without knowing they both wanted the same thing. Jungkook remembers what it felt like to hold Tae in his arms. And he won't rest until the day he can feel that again.
