Waking Up

The sunlight danced upon my eyelids and tried to me to wake from my slumber as I rebelled and rolled onto my side. I then felt a hand on my shoulder shaking it gently and a voice say "Rise up milady. We better start getting you ready for the crowning ceremony."

I scurried over to the other side of the bed and rolled to face the intruder. My eyes opened wide and bounced around the room. I was on a wooden 4 post bed in a room that I've never been in before in my life and looking at a plump, stout middle aged lady wearing a tattered beige dress with a stained white apron. What really got my attention was the view outside the floor to ceiling glass paned windows... Mountains and forests could be seen in the distance and a small dark lake could be seen just outside.

"It's gonna be fine milady", exclaimed the woman.

The woman obviously took the petrified look of fear on my face to be one of nervousness and slight panic. The fear took over me and I froze as my body shut down as the woman reached for me. She started to lead me out of the room towards the neighbouring one when a team of ladies came into view. My body was numb and my brain was still as they all grasped my thin white nightgown and bathed my body in the large copper tub in the middle of the room.

What was happening? I started to reflect and recall the memories I had of last night. It had been a normal night. I had stayed in reading a book until my eyes could stand no more. It had been the summer solstice and the light in the sky was still visible as I fell asleep. The book I had been reading was a mere romance novel that I had picked up at a yard sale a few weeks ago. The story was your typical modern day romance and the cover was basic, but I had been drawn to the book and the frail woman that I bought it from smiled and told me to enjoy reading it as I paid for the mere book.

This must be a dream! But it seems so real and the ladies readying my body seem to be wearing and doing things that I've never seen before.

I looked down at my slender body as I'm pulled up from the tub and notice my long wavy hair is the colour of the tub. A dark ginger colour instead of my normal golden brown locks. Who was I?

As I was placed on a small chair in front of a small vanity I could see my reflection in the murky mirror on the wall in front. I looked like myself except for the hair. My sharp jaw line was prominent along with my button nose and my eye colour fought to be both green and blue. As I sat in a robe and stared at myself, the ladies were busily putting rouge on my cheeks, red on my lips and putting my hair in an elaborate up do. They spoke to themselves softly as tell could tell I wasn't fully there until one said, "It is now time to put on the gown."

They all started squealing excitedly as two of the ladies carried over a long flowing emerald green dress with a gold laced bodice. They guided me into the complicated dress with all it's layers and announced me ready. "Beautiful milady!" exclaimed the plumpy lady that had awoken me this morning.

What was I ready for? I wondered as I was lead out of the bedroom and through the large wooden door that contained the last of my sanity.
