chapter nine ━ the avery family
( season six, episode sixteen )

❝I find that incredibly offensive.
I was wonderful as a teenager.❞

ELLIE STOOD IN line at the coffee cart when she felt her arm being pulled. She stumbled as Derek dragged her across the hospital and into his office. He closed the door and Ellie rubbed her arm. "What the hell was that for?!"

"I have seen my sister-in-law naked and I saw Mark having sex in a utility closet," he replied and she wrinkled her nose. "It's too early in the morning for me to be seeing this many people naked."

"I'm perfectly aware it's early," she retorted in annoyance. "That's why I was standing in line at the coffee cart when you oh so kindly pulled me away." She held out her hand expectedly. "Can I get five dollars for coffee?"

"You have your own money."

"Yes, I do. But you took me away from coffee." Derek sighed and pulls out a five-dollar bill. Ellie smiled brightly. "Thank you. Love you!"

"You're just as bad as when you were a teenager."

Ellie put a hand over her chest. "I find that incredibly offensive. I was wonderful as a teenager."

"You're not offended that I said you were acting like a teenager?" Derek asked, furrowing his brows.

"No, because I was a wonderful teenager," she reiterated and he rolled his eyes. "Admit it, any parent would be lucky to have me as a kid. Granted, my parents were never around so I was left to be taken care of by a fourteen-year-old and his friend's mother."

"Ah yes, David and Judith Sloan," Derek said thoughtfully. "Not the recipients of the 'best parents of the year' award."

"You got that right." She nodded in agreement. "Oh, right, your mom says hi."

Derek furrowed his eyebrows and looked at her. "What do you mean 'my mom says hi'? Are you talking to her?"

"Would it offend you if I was?" she asked with a smirk. "The woman practically raised me. Aside from Mark, of course. She calls at least once a month."

"What?!"

Ellie stared at her brother. "Does she not call you that often?"

"Maybe every other month if I'm lucky." He sighed. "I knew she liked you more than the rest of us."

"Like I said, Derek..." Ellie smiled and patted his shoulder. "I'd be any parent's dream child. Just maybe not my own parents."

Derek rolled his eyes and gave her a twenty-dollar bill. "Go, get coffee, food, I don't care. Just, go!"

"You're the one who dragged me in here. You have nobody to blame but yourself." She smiled sweetly before leaving the office.

Derek looked around and shook his head. "Mom doesn't call her once a month. That can't be right." He thought about it more. "No, she doesn't call that much."
