chapter fifty ━ our condolences
( season nine, episode four )

❝I'm not broken or incapable.
I'm grieving.❞

ELLIE WAS STANDING at the nurse's station when she felt a presence join her across from the table. She glanced up from her chart. "Good morning, Dr. Webber," she said, holding her head in her hand. "You look very put together today. Nice tie, by the way."

Richard smiled at her. "Finally." He gestured at her in victory. "Finally—somebody likes the tie! It felt like a tie kind of day."

The blonde nodded slowly. "Hmm," she hummed to herself knowingly. "And it has nothing to do with the fact that Catherine Avery is coming to the hospital today? Per your request, might I add?"

"The tie has nothing to do with it," Richard denied and Ellie pressed her lips together in amusement. "Carry on, Dr. Sloan."

She tilted her head as he walked away. "Go Webber."

"Go Webber, what?"

Ellie paused when she heard Jackson's voice. She turned around slowly. "Um—uh—nothing," she said and he furrowed his eyebrows when her voice went up an octave. She cleared her throat. "I was just complimenting Dr. Webber about his tie." She nodded. "Yep."

"Okay...?" He shook his head. "Uh—anyway, there was a call for you after you left the apartment today."

"From who?" she asked.

"The bank," he replied and she looked back at him. "Something about Mark's inheritance, I think?"

She let out a breath with a nod. "Okay," she said quietly. "Thanks. I'll try and call them later today." She kissed his cheek. "I'll see you later. I told Derek I would give him notes about his teaching skills."

"The world-famous neurosurgeon demoted to teacher," Jackson commented and she snorted softly. "Oof."

"I think Amy would love hearing you say it like that," she replied with a small smile. She went to the skills lab where Derek was teaching the new surgical interns. She leaned in the doorway of the room and glanced at them; they looked like they would rather be anywhere but there.

"Any questions?"

The interns stayed silent before Shane Ross, the intern who had asked Ellie about Mark when he died, raised his hand. "When you performed that trans cranial resection of clival chordoma in 2003, did you realize you'd become a major influence on surgeons around the world?" he asked and Derek hung his head.

He let out a breath. "Any questions about central lines?" he asked in exasperation. Once again, the interns stayed silent and he looked around at them. "Okay, look, I get that you went over this in med school, but as interns, you're gonna be asked to insert central lines every day."
