chapter forty-nine ━ settlement talks
( season nine, episode three )

❝Just because my brother died doesn't
mean that I'm incapable of being a
surgeon.❞

ELLIE SAT IN the conference room with her arms crossed and a distant look on her face. Derek and Meredith sat next to her while Callie and Owen joined them, representing Arizona and Cristina—the former still recovering from her leg amputation and the latter in Minnesota at Mayo for her fellowship.

"Derek Shepherd, multiple fractures with a median nerve injury," one of the lawyers began listing and Ellie glanced at the man's bandaged hand that she had attempted to fix in the woods. "Arizona Robbins—open femur fracture with resultant above-knee amputation. Lexie Grey—deceased. Mark Sloan—deceased. This doesn't include extreme—" The blonde let out a shaky breath and closed her eyes, wishing she was anywhere but sitting in the conference room, talking about the worst event of their lives. "—wish for me to extend their deepest condolences."

"How—How is the investigation going?" Derek asked, interrupting the male lawyer and Ellie nodded in agreement.

"Have they found what caused the crash?" she added.

"The investigation could take years," the lawyer replied and she rolled her eyes. "That's why we want to help you put this tragedy behind you."

Ellie stared back at him. "'Behind us?'" she repeated slowly. "My niece lost her father, Derek and I lost a brother, and Meredith lost her sister. How exactly do we 'put it behind us'?"

"I think, he means, his clients would like to put it behind them," Derek commented.

"So, I am authorized at this time to propose a one-time settlement," the lawyer continued. "Bayview Aeronautics takes your loss seriously—" He handed a sheet to Ellie whose eyes widened at the contents before passing it to Derek. "—Now the settlement agreement must be unanimous, and it releases Bayview Aeronautics from any other claims—known or unknown—but, most important, it will allow you to put this painful time behind you and move on with your lives."

Ellie and Derek glanced at each other before the blonde nodded to herself, standing up. "Alright, then. If you'll all excuse me."

"Where are you going?" Derek asked her and she looked back at him.

"I have to go sort through all of Mark's assets," she replied, opening the door. "Because that's my new normal." Her eyes shifted to the lawyers. "So you can tell Bayview that I won't be 'putting this behind me' any time soon. I don't care how much money they offer us."

She let out a breath and closed the door behind her. She exited the hospital and to her car, staring out of the windshield once she was inside. With much reluctance, she turned on her engine and drove in the direction of her lawyer's office.
