chapter thirty ━ aunt ellie
( season seven, episodes nineteen & twenty )

❝Oh, don't go weak on me
now.❞

IT HAD BEEN a week since Callie's accident threatened the life of both her and her daughter. Sofia Robbins Sloan Torres currently weighed one pound, one ounce, and everyone was trying their hardest to keep Callie's spirits alive throughout her recovery.

As for Ellie, she had barely left the hospital.

Whether she was continuing to work Callie's service until she returned, or working on the diabetes trial with Richard Webber, she was hardly ever at home.

Which was fine since Mark, in his coping mechanism while his daughter was gaining strength, took to annoying her at every opportunity he had.

"Hey!" Ellie looked behind her as she was walking toward the lab with a pile of charts balancing in her arms while her coffee sat on top and Jackson approached her. "I'm with you today."

She furrowed her brows and he took the coffee from her to keep it from spilling. "You—You're on ortho? Since when?"

He shook his head. "Oh, no. The trial."

She smiled. "Webber chose you?" she asked. "Hey, that's great, Jackie!" Her pager went off and she sighed, looking down at the charts in her arms. "Can you grab that for me?"

"Oh, sure." He looked at her pager. "It's Callie."

Ellie fluttered her lips. "Alright, then. Here, you take these." She dropped the charts into his arms and he stumbled slightly making her roll her eyes. "Oh, don't go weak on me now." She took back her cup of iced coffee. "I'll be by in a minute. And if the chief asks, I have a consult."

"There are more charts?" Jackson asked with a small whine. "Damn it..."

She shrugged and nudged him on the shoulder. "You're the one who wanted in on the trial," she reminded him before smiling brightly and making her way to Callie's room where she found her crying hysterically in her bed. "What happened?"

"April mentioned Sofia and that she looked at her, and now she hasn't stopped crying," Cristina replied as Ellie walked into the room.

She glanced at the resident. "And you didn't think to console her?" she asked.

"Have you met me?" Cristina retorted and Ellie rolled her eyes. "I'm not good at this stuff."

Ellie sighed and pushed her out of the room. "Just... go away." She turned back to the new mother who was still sobbing. "Callie. Callie, shh, take a breath. Please. Before you start hyperventilating."

"I'm missing it, Ellie!" Callie cried while the resident rubbed her arm in comfort. "I am missing all of her milestones! I could miss her whole life!"
