Everyone had decided to stay at John B's that night and normally I would have too but my dad had been so on edge lately since my mom decided to up and disappear again that I knew if he woke up tomorrow and I wasn't there it would have only been worse for me whenever I did go home. Any other time he wouldn't care where I went or if I even came home but when my mom was out doing whatever it was that was more important than her husband and her daughter he got even worse.

No one knew what my dad was like, except JJ as of recently, and I wasn't going to be able to talk my way out of why I wanted to go home and not stay at the Chateau with everyone so I waited until they were all fast asleep. I laid in the spare room, still fully clothed with my shoes on, just waiting for the right moment to make my escape. I could hear John B's light snores coming from his room and sighed, one down three to go. Kie and Pope chatted for a bit in hushed whispers. I couldn't hear what they were talking about but eventually the sound drifted off. I waited ten more minutes before I pushed myself up from the bed, peeking out the door of the spare room, figuring if they were still awake I'd just turn to the right and head to the bathroom, but luckily they were asleep.

Three down and one to go. I wasn't sure where JJ had ended up and I could only pray that he was asleep. I knew if he saw me sneaking out it wouldn't go over well especially since my bruises were still fresh from the last time I was home. I snuck through the living room, making sure to step over a few beer cans and a half empty box of pizza. I was able to get through the front door that hadn't been closed all the way to see JJ passed out on the couch on the porch, his hat covering face, his arms crossed over his chest, and his boots propped up on the arm of the couch.

I ran my tongue along my bottom lip as my hand wrapped around the handle of the screen door. This was it. All I had to do was get out the door and down the steps and then I could run. I pulled on the handle as slowly as I could and the hinges screeched louder than I have ever heard in all my years of coming to the Chateau. I whipped my head in JJ's direction to make sure it didn't wake him and let out a breath I didn't realize I was holding when he hadn't moved.

I stepped onto the stairs, leaving the screen door open not wanting to chance waking JJ. I wasn't sure I would be so lucky twice. My foot hit the grass and just as I was about to push off into a run there was a voice behind me, making me jump.

"Psst, where are you off to?"

My chin dropped to my chest in defeat as I spun on my heel to see JJ leaning against the doorframe, his red hat now on his head backwards, a small smirk playing on his lips that he had caught me but I knew the second I opened my mouth that he was going to be so angry with me not to mention fight with me to stay.

"Uh, Jay, I'm gonna go home," I whispered, hoping that if it was quiet enough that maybe he wouldn't hear me and I could slip away instead of starting a fight I was so close to avoiding.
