Melania and Astel were in the cafeteria eating some breakfast. Astel was eating her shrimp peacefully, while Melania was eating hers like she was sent to death row and this was her last meal, which she wasn't. She just felt that way.“Hey Astel aren’t brown stingrays freshwater? Got into the salt from some cross breeding?”.
“Yeah my mami said that I was cross-bread but never specified on who with. I was lucky though, since the only thing that is different about me is that I can be in both salt and freshwater. I had lived in freshwater for early childhood, but my mami realized that it irritated me so during the school year I stayed in the saltwater with a family friend”. She took another shrimp. “And stayed in freshwater during the summer, but it wasn’t that much fun since the freshwater irritated me but I survived. I’m also way bigger than a regular freshwater brown stingray, I was bigger than my mom when I was 10!”.
“Talk about irritations, when I had to go off of my medication, the headaches”. Melania swayed the shrimp around but stopped to look at a wide eyed Astel. “Why are you looking like that for 3 eyes?”.
Astel was recounting everything her roommates said about Meli being crazy and her mood swings. It all made sense, she WASN’T ON HER MEDICATION! “What was your medication? Why did you stop? Are you willing to go back? Where's the nearest pharmacy? Can we go now?".
3 eyes were asking questions faster than Meli could answer them. Meli threw a shrimp at 3 eyes to get her to stop. She loved how even with one of her eyes missing, she still did a wide eyed stare like she could see out of her left socket, how cute.
“I took them when I needed to, then one day it disappeared. POOF! Now how irritating was the freshwater for you? That eel was really trying to change the conversation about her being medicated.
“What's the name of it?”.
“The place you stayed when you were in freshwater? How should I know?”.
“The name of your medication Meli!”. Astel was ashamed of herself for being interested in rocks instead of chemistry lessons in school. Though rocks did give her the happiest moments of her childhood in the freshwater at least.
“Why? I would take it if I knew the name, but I made it a job to forget”.
“Melania Leech!”. Everyone and their grandmother's heads turned at Astel using Mels name like that. Astel was a soldier and already had her eye taken out by Mel, so they were sure she was as good as dead.
“Ooooh, almost full namin’ me. Feisty, I like”. Everyone looked at Astel like she had just defused a bomb that was about to go off in less than 5 seconds.
Astel realized the stares so she thought it was time to go. “I better feed the workers. Don’t want them slacking from starvation”.
“Have fun, cutie~”. Meli waved her goodbye.
A tigerfish mer woman came to Astel as soon as the stingray was a safe distance from Mel. “How are you not dead yet?”.
