Charles sat on a stone bed on their yacht and had his head supported on his hands and thought of Diana's words "that you're actually one" without wanting to admit it, the words hit him harder than he thought.
"Damn Di, why do you always make it so difficult?" he thought with a sigh and felt the guilt build up in him again.
He hated every single argument between them and it seemed like there was nothing stopping the arguments because they could argue about anything and everything. Partly often without any connection at all and about every little thing and he hated seeing Diana in this sad and hurt state afterwards and wanted to banish this state from her life forever.
Charles wanted nothing more than to get her back to her happy and radiant self, adored by the world. He wanted to concentrate on packing his things neatly into the suitcases so he didn't forget or crumple anything.
He loathe it when one of his shirts got wrinkled but he could only focus on the sad eyes of his beautiful wife who kept looking at him in disappointment when he said they had to end their vacation early and sighed thoughtfully.
Maybe Diana was right and they should go through with this vacation completely, maybe they could reconcile and focus on being husband and wife instead of acting like two strangers to each other, which they practically were. He could still give it a chance.
Charles sighed and went to his secretary. "I've made up my mind...we're going to stay here in Italy."
which earned him an incredulous look. "But sir...the problems at home." His secretary began an argument and Charles interrupted him for the first time with a cool gesture.
"Someone else will take care of it. It's our family trip, I'd like to finish it with my family."
his secretary was still very upset. "All right your highness. I will cancel the trip for England." and said those words with an audible reluctant tone while beginning to plan for the return trip to be cancelled.
Charles went to his wife's cabin to tell her the next steps of the journey and to hope for a reconciliation. Aware that he definitely didn't deserve a reconciliation with her
Diana, who was in her cabin, furiously put her clothes in the suitcases, disappointed.
She had hoped so much that this holiday would change something between them, but she should have known better than to be naïve. Diana wished that she and Charles would really try each other. Not because the Crown demanded it, or the people. But only for the two of them and their little boys.
She wanted to have a happy little family and not one that breaks apart in an argument every time something doesn't fit together. Distracted by the knocking, she quickly rubbed her cheeks roughly and wiped away the tears that she didn't even know she had cried until now and said, trembling but in a strong tone, "Come in?" Slightly curious, she looked at the door and saw Charles come in.
"may I?" Charles asked and Diana rolled her eyes slightly causing him to sigh "come on Diana. Let's chat like sensible adults for once. I have news you might very well like" Charles offered to coax Diana out of her shell and it worked and diana looked at him skeptically but also curiously.
"what news?" Diana asked interestedly as she continued packing and Charles held her hand tightly and leaned into her ear.
"That we will stay here." Charles whispered with a grin which grew even wider when Diana turned to him in disbelief and wide-eyed.
"Really, we stay?" She asked hopefully, jumping slightly for joy, and Charles nodded, smiling.
"Really. We're staying here darling." Charles promised lovingly and Diana jumped enthusiastically into his arm, beaming, but then became more suspicious again.
"You really wanted to go home why the change of heart?".
Charles took Diana's hand and sat her down on the bed. "You, Diana. Are the reason for the change of heart. I would like to come home from a trip where no one was sad or hurt and as I was packing I saw your crying face in front of me and I always hated the thought of crying See. That's why I wanted to stay here so we could...maybe give each other another chance." Charles tenderly offered her.
Diana nodded, smiling shyly as she nuzzled her head on his shoulders. "I think I would like it." She said while she rested her head shyly on his shoulders and thought naively that she still felt a small glimmer of hope.
