A/N: reading the first book isn't really needed to understand this but there will be a few references from the first book so I recommend reading the first one but you don't have too
The school was filled with a light hearted feeling despite the gloom of its dark wood hallways and stone pathways. The sunlight seemed brighter, the air fresher, and the work less stressful as the students walked with a new found carefree attitude. School had reached finals week, and with it came time to go home for the summer.
Enid and Wednesday stood in their stark dorm room, empty save for their packed suitcases. It had been stripped of everything and Enid felt the absence of her colors and plushies strongly. They were all in a storage unit she had rented nearby. Wednesday hadn't had enough personal affects to bother with a unit, opting to take everything home.
Enid knew she should be happy and excited to go home. A few months ago over winter break, she and Wednesday had hatched a scheme to fake date to annoy Esther for her rude treatment of Enid. One thing had led to another, and before long Enid and Wednesday had admitted to their feelings for each other and started actually dating. The past few months at school had been amazing, getting to know each other more and being able to kiss and hug whenever they wanted to.
However, this freedom hadn't come without a price. Enid's family pack dynamic had been torn apart by their relationship. Esther's vile behavior in hiring a Hunter to try and kill Wednesday had been revealed and Murray had taken the kids from her. Only Abraham had stayed by his disgraced mother's side as Murray kept the other kids safe.
Enid hadn't been back home, and she was afraid to visit. She wasn't sure she could deal with the consequences of all that just yet. She knew it was cowardly of her, but she wanted this happiness she had with Wednesday to last a little longer and visiting her family would only stress her out more. She kept telling herself she would visit when she felt able to, emotionally and mentally.
Esther had been pestering Murray to reconnect the family but he stayed surprisingly resilient on this topic for a man who had once simply let every indiscretion pass by without a blink of the eye.
For once, he was standing up to her. And he'd never been happier doing so. He actually regained his ability to smile and he spoke more often. Bartholomew was resentful towards Enid for splitting the family up and had not reached out to her even once after winter break. Chris was too busy with his friends, or too busy training so he could face Wednesday again to care. Devin missed Enid and Wednesday. Mostly Wednesday, as he would text Enid inquiring about Wednesday visiting so they could start their training sessions.
Enid didn't have the heart to tell her family she felt guilt seeing them broken up like this, even if most of it had been for the best. Enid regretted that but she could not regret the murder she had committed in Wednesday's name. Sometimes nightmares would plague Enid about that event. About their courtship dance where Wednesday had been shot through the heart by the Hunter Esther Sinclair had hired. Enid had wolfed out and ripped him to shreds until nothing but blood remained. The nightmares weren't of her killing him. She felt not an ounce of regret for it, not even now. She'd never thought she'd feel this way about something so horrible. She was against violence and blood and gore. In that moment, something had shifted inside her, and she'd let loose her feral animalistic nature.
No, her nightmares were of her failing to kill him, and having to relive the moment Wednesday had momentarily died. She knew now that Wednesday couldn't die. Not as long as she was in love with Enid. Such was the power of the Addams family curse, wherein the family couldn't hurt each other with their macabre and tortuous hobbies but could be hurt by outsiders unless of course, an Addams found love with someone non-Addams and then the curse's power was extended. Enid was a bit hazy about the exact way the curse functioned but she figured she'd be told the more important parts later.
