Enid let out a groan as a beeping
monitor heralded her entrance back to the world of the awake. She was lying on a white bed, feeling horrible. Every muscle in her body ached and she could taste tar in her mouth.

"Enid."

A soft voice drew Enid's attention to Wednesday who was sitting by Enid's bedside. She looked tired, like she hadn't slept in days. Her clothes were rumpled and her hair had one braid almost undone.

"Wednesday?" Enid breathed out, finding that even her tongue hurt to use.

"Don't talk. And don't sit up. You're hurt," Wednesday said.

"How badly," Enid asked, eyes fluttering when she recalled the truck. Her body tensed as if bracing for another impact and she winced in pain as she jarred her injuries.

"A lot of bruising. Your wolf side healed a lot of your broken bones."

That would explain the pain and soreness. Enid hoped the doctors wouldn't get too suspicious.

"How long was I out for?"

"About a week." Wednesday swallowed harshly. "What were you thinking, Enid? Why did you run into traffic?"

Enid looked at Wednesday oddly. "You were there."

"I was there?" Wednesday questioned.

Enid nodded her head slightly. "Standing on the freeway. I called out to you, but you didn't hear me. So I went to pull you to safety, and you told me goodbye before the truck came." Enid swallowed harshly at the memory.

"Enid, I wasn't there. I was at home. There was no way I would stand on a freeway like that," Wednesday said slowly.

Enid's brows furrowed up. "But-I swear I saw you there!"

Wednesday thinned her lips. "That could have been a result of your dip in the lake, Enid. Oxygen deprivation is serious business. It can lead to hallucinations."

"Oh," Enid said, disappointed in herself. How could she have been so stupid?

"I'm just happy you're alright," Wednesday sighed, reaching to touch the back of Enid's hand. Enid felt warmth at that, clinging tightly to Wednesday's hand. "Father and mother are looking to erase any trace of your records and stay at this hospital from the normies memories. We're putting you with Dr. Frankenstein for the rest of your stay. We couldn't afford to move you until you woke up yourself."

"Whose that?"

"A family doctor. You'll be in good hands. He saved me when I took an arrow to the heart to save Andrew's life."

"How is Andrew? I lost him that day at the mall."

"He's distraught. He blames himself for what happened. He said he wanted to surprise you with a special treat as an apology for the lake incident and he was running late. When he got back, the ambulance had already taken you away. I came as soon as I found out."

"What rotten luck," Enid murmured.

"Indeed," Wednesday said. "Maybe you should go home for the rest of the summer. I don't want you getting hurt anymore. Your wolf side protected you this time, but what if it won't be enough next time?"

Enid didn't want to go home to her family. She should want to, but something she couldn't put her finger on was holding her back.

Gomez and Morticia walked into the room, arm in arm. "My dear Enid, we are glad to see you awake and well!"
