Partially reassured by Wednesday explaining things to her, Enid removed the dark make up and clothing and the black wig she wore to come back to her usual outfits. There was no point in pretending about this, when Enid would need to spend her energy pretending the entire summer she wasn't in love with Wednesday.

That night, Enid slept for the first time in a long time, alone in a bed. Back in Nevermore, they had gotten used to sleeping together in Wednesday's bed, Enid the small spoon and Wednesday the big spoon. Now, Enid could barely sleep at all alone, and it didn't just have to do with loneliness and missing the comfort of Wednesday holding her safe. It had to do with the haunting noises in this room.

Enid held the covers up to her eyes, hoping they would keep her safe. Monsters couldn't get her if she stayed under them, right?

The room creaked and groaned around Enid. She couldn't sleep. She was too scared.

She couldn't see anything in the room, even with her enhanced vision, but she could feel something. "Hello?" she whimpered, feeling like the protagonist of every horror movie.

"Yes?"

Enid had not been expecting a reply. She bolted up so quickly from the bed it was comical. She ran down the hall to Wednesday's room, not even bothering to knock before entering. She threw the door open with a rattling shake, waking Wednesday up.

"Enid?" Wednesday asked, voice sleepy.

"Wednesday, there is something in that room with me!" Enid yelped out, feeling like a five year old that just had a nightmare complaining to it's parents.

"There is something in every room-"

"I'll pretend I didn't hear that," Enid said.

"Enid," Wednesday sighed.

"I can't go back there. I can't." Enid clasped her hands together.

Wednesday sighed and pulled back the covers. "No one can know. Do you understand?"

Enid gratefully scrambled under the covers and curled up to Wednesday's chest. Within seconds the steady breathing of Wednesday had Enid calming down and lulled her into slumber. In the morning she woke up to find Wednesday was spooning her from behind, and was breathing soundly into Enid's shoulder.

Wednesday wouldn't admit it out loud, but she probably wasn't used to sleeping alone anymore either. Enid relished these few minutes of warmth between them before Wednesday began to stir. When she saw them lying close together she whirled around and got out of bed. Enid suffered down a disappointed sigh.

This was going to worse torment then the time they had fake dated. At least then, they hadn't been together so Enid hadn't felt the keen pain of having something in her grasp wretched painfully from her.

"Enid if you're up, breakfast will be in a little while. I know my father and brother wanted you to go hiking with them."

"Are you not joining us?"

"Mother requires my help in the garden," Wednesday said, looking in her drawer for clothing. "I figure distance might make this a bit easier for us."

Right, they wouldn't be even doing activities together. Why would they be?

Wednesday went to wash up in the adjoining bathroom and Enid trudged over to her room to get changed and washed up. When she got downstairs, breakfast was made and the family was sitting at the table. They chatted about this and that and Enid felt some warmth swell in her chest.

This family dynamic....she had craved this so hard when she was younger. Family sitting together, listening to the other speak, praising with affection in eyes on things she'd accomplished. Her parents could never give her that. And it stung.
