It was Thursday, three days since Abhay had had that dinner conversation with Amrit. She hadn't made it easy on him. No Sir, and Abhay had slowly found that she was not a very forgiving person though she had forgiven him eventually. Was he annoyed with her over that? No. Actually he had admired her for it. She was the kind of person who wouldn't let you get away with things easily and she was back to her sassy self too. He found he could handle her better like this than when she had been trying to be someone else. He smiled. She was such a contrast compared to Natasha.
Natasha had never cared to begin with for her if things were going her way rest was all fine. Where he had been more caring for her making sure she had everything, enjoyed the kind of lifestyle she had wanted and had given her the freedom to come and go as she pleased. Maybe that was the mistake he had made. She had started taking him for granted while he hadn't expected anything in return at all. For him her happiness meant everything. Not that Amrit's happiness meant nothing. It was just as important but he was still learning about her. Every day brought a new facet of hers to light and he found he was enjoying studying her like this. She was a warm human being though she didn't like showing it often cloaking it with her gruff exterior. She was also very simple. Her fetish was books. The amount she had he had been amazed and then amused. Her knowledge was unparalleled so far and no matter what she said otherwise about her cooking skills she was hell of a cook. She was a bit like him in her habits. Not that disciplined maybe but some things like keeping things in its proper place, making sure things were in order and done on time. She was particular about these things. Unlike Natasha. She had been untidy, expecting others to pick after her whether it was things or feelings. She had only been concerned with one person and that was herself. It didn't matter if Abhay came late or did not have food or did not have his things in place. Abhay sighed he had to get out of this mode of constant comparison he kept doing between the two women which was fast becoming a habit. His life with Natasha was over and done with and he wouldn't achieve anything by this anyway. His life now was with Amrit and she should be the one he concentrated on.
He passed through the passage near the shooting range and saw a few officers in training, practice their shooting skills. Jassi had called him just to let him know she liked Amrit and was going to be friends with her. She had chatted incessantly and Abhay had listened to her without a comment. She seemed to be impressed with Amrit too. He couldn't stop himself from wondering why she had strained relationships with her family members but not with others. Why did she have the reputation of being a shrew? Granted she was sharp with her tongue but then he hadn't seen her use it often with others only with some people. That was a mystery he was itching to crack.
He heard a shot being fired and looked in the direction. He could see through the fence that demarcated the shooting range and the small walkway that he had taken towards the main building. He suddenly felt a searing pain in his right arm and looked at what had caused it. He saw blood oozing out. Damn. He looked back at where the new fellow stood with the rifle in his hand staring at him with disbelief. He heard a shout and a couple of his fellow officers run towards him. Seemed like the man had missed his target by miles. The bullet had hit his arm instead of the target he had been practicing for. Dizziness clouded his mind. It was not new. He had had severe wounds before too but it felt more significant today considering he had just talked about it the other day with Amrit. What would she think of this? He hadn't been wounded in the battlefield but walking past a shooting range. What the hell? Wait till he found out who the man was. He would take him to task for this inconvenience. For now he better head to the medical room and get this fixed. If Amrit found out he wasn't sure how she would react.
His colleagues reached him and inspected the wound then helped him reach the army hospital. He was immediately admitted. Harpreet Sardana was the doctor on duty. And Abhay was grateful his friend was around. He just hoped Amrit wouldn't flip and be able to understand the situation as it was. Because he wasn't sure what he would do if she didn't. Damn.
