The doctor inspected Amrit's wound while Abhay stood by the bed with his arms across his chest and a formidable expression on his face which meant to not push him any further. Amrit thought he was overreacting but wisely decided to not voice the words. Why was he so tensed? He had been gruff earlier too but she had preferred it to his silence now. After the doctor was done he declared her to be none the worse and Amrit breathed a sigh of relief though she winced a bit at what he said next.

"Well, she seems fine," the doctor said, "though it could have been dangerous if the wound had been deeper and she would have lost consciousness for a long period of time. But she didn't, for the ankle I must say she did a bad job. Though the relief is she didn't break it," he said with a smile not realizing the tension in the room.

Amrit felt like breaking the doctor's nose. Couldn't he have just stopped at 'she was fine' instead of going on and adding words like 'dangerous' and 'bad'. What was he, dumb? Didn't he see the way Abhay's jaw clenched and the nerve tick furiously in his temple?

"Thankfully she doesn't need any stitches," the doctor went on and Amrit groaned. "She needs rest and keep her weight off her foot for a couple of days. Once the swelling goes down she would be fine. If you think she is incoherent or is having a concussion bring her to the hospital and we will give her a thorough checkup," he said as he clicked his medical box shut, "I will give some medicines to keep the pain in control and that temperature," he said.

Amrit shot him a look that suggested once she was on her feet again she was going to box his ears.

"Temperature?" Abhay asked quietly and Amrit closed her eyes. Damn.

"Yes, she has fever," the doctor said cheerfully, "she has probably had it for a while now. Maybe that was why she slipped in the bathroom, she could have had a dizzying spell," he told Abhay and he just nodded.

Amrit was sure she was going to do a lot more damage to him than just box his ears. The man seemed immune to sensitivity. Couldn't he see the gravity of the situation? And why the hell was Abhay so mad? She was the one who fell. She was the one who got hurt. What was he mad about? It wasn't as if she had complained. She didn't like Abhay's attitude one bit. He had been much more understanding about her past than about her present state. But it seemed the doctor had finally caught on to his mood because he gave him the prescription then murmured get well soon and left. Abhay followed him out. Amrit fell back on the pillows and though she wanted to stay awake and ask Abhay what was wrong with him but her lids felt heavy and she was asleep in a matter of seconds. Maybe the doctor was right she should rest.

By the time Abhay came back to the room to check on her she was fast asleep. He sat next to her for a while just gazing at her then lightly touched her cheek. Her skin was hot. How had he missed her temperature when he had cleaned her wound before? Maybe because he was concentrating on the job or maybe her temperature had been down then or not as hot. He saw the faint shadows under her eyes. He didn't like her this way. The doctor had assured him with proper rest she would be up an about in a couple of days. Maybe the excitement of the past weekend had caught up. She must have been in a lot pain but she hadn't complained once and he had been so mean to her. But he was worried dammit. All his confidence had taken a backseat. He hadn't been there. What if something worse had happened? The doctor was right. What if she had lost consciousness? What would he have done then? This was an accident but he still felt guilty. The issue of how important she was to him was here in front of him again and for the first time he couldn't ignore it. She had come to mean so much to him in such a short time it wasn't even funny. Though he was adamant on one thing that he wasn't in love with her. He could never fall in love again. He heard her gentle snore. She was out for a while it seemed maybe he could quickly get her medicines before the shop closed at nine and some warm food she could take with her medicine. He rose and placing the sheet around her sleeping form left smiling a little as he noticed her bandaged foot. She had refused to take her leg out of the sheet on the pretext of modesty with only poking her foot out.

Damn, if she wasn't important. He felt at peace with her. Couldn't she just be important to him without him falling in love with her? He pondered over it the entire way to the market. That was one truth he was not ready to face yet. That he might already be treacherously close to being in love with her.
