Amrit took two steps at a time to her room and closed the door. Then closed all the windows dousing her room into darkness. As her anger subsided the enormity of what she had done shook her to her core. What had she done? How had she given in to her anger? How many years had she let it fester her soul corroding it so much that she slapped her sister in front of so many people she should have left when beeji had asked her to. What had she done? She trembled. She put her shaking hands to her mouth as she felt hot tears squeeze through her eyes. She sat down on the floor and rocked herself back and forth to get herself under control.
Years of suppressed anger and pain took over. Everything Simrit had taken away from her flashed through her mind. She felt suffocated by the intensity of the pain she had always brushed off. She remembered the day when she had stood all alone while her entire family had stood with Simrit after her marriage with Varun. Yes, Simrit had done a huge favor by doing that and Amrit had slowly realized that fact over the years that had followed but the betrayal and the deceit had hurt like hell. Her parents had told her 'what is done is done' in those exact words, beeji had asked her to 'move on' and the others had gloated over how their daughters would never have done such a thing. It had been a huge scandal and Amrit had run. She had applied for a job in Delhi and she had got it. She had done her M. Phil and was doing well but she had never really moved on, never really got over it. Her family had betrayed her too. Why couldn't her mother slap Simrit for what she had done instead of giving in and then welcoming them home? How could she give away everything that was supposed to be her gifts to Simrit just because she was married? How could they celebrate every festival and occasion with Simrit as if nothing had happened? The easy acceptance of Simrit had made her hate all of them. She was no paragon and she didn't want to be one. They had hurt her, put her through tremendous pain and expected her to forget it just like that. It didn't matter that she didn't love Varun. It had been an arranged marriage too but the fact that it had been her wedding day, she was all dressed up as a bride with an engagement ring on her finger waiting for her future husband and everything else, waiting to realize the dream that she would be married and then the news that Varun had married Simrit in the court. Amrit relived that pain, that moment. Her family had actually celebrated the event later in the day once they had gotten past the shock and the anger.
And now, she recalled all Simrit had said to her. How dare she insult Abhay? What had he ever done to her? He had been polite, sincere in his respect to Simrit and her family despite everything Varun had said. He had even volunteered to help with the preparations what more did her family want. And still no one had tried to stop Simrit from saying all those awful words about him. Why? Was it too much to ask? Was it too much to expect? He was also the son in law of this family then why was it so hard for the elders present in the room to stop Simrit? Her head had started to ache. She couldn't stay here she decided as she rocked herself holding her body stiffly. She will not subject Abhay to further humiliation. Now that everyone knew about his past she wouldn't put it past any of them to not use it to get to him. She was done with this family. She never wanted to come back here. She wouldn't.
Let them be happy with each other. They deserved each other. She will not have anything to do with them anymore. The tears flowed while she thought. But the flood gates were still not open yet. She needed to let it all out and she waited for her best friend to return. The peace she had felt when she had left the room after slapping Simrit had been momentary. Probably it was not peace at all. Only Abhay could bring that. And so she waited. It wouldn't take him long. He would be here soon she told herself.
