Chapter 4: Becoming War Horses
Astra yawned as they came to a stop before the guild before the required time, the guild was open as it always was even if it was a few hours before dawn. Horses and carts were already at the front, four open and one covered were for the adventurer guild group another three open and three covered were for the merchant group travelling with them. The Merchant guild will have paid the guild to allow them to travel with their group, it meant that the guild would protect the merchants regardless, but they were not obligated to any other groups unless they too paid the fee.
"I best go in," Jayda told her as she walked into the guild, Astra followed her and walked over to the bar and ordered herbal tea. She ignored the looks from the other people gathering, until everyone was here, they wouldn't figure out their formations and their chain of command.
Jayda returned just as the tea came, Astra had ordered for two so Jayda took the spare cup and sipped.
"First time in such a large group?" Astra asked knowing it was true but also noticed that Jayda was not on edge, something fully transitioned Wildlings had trouble with back home.
Jayda nodded and watched as the guild filled up. A third person joined their table, Jayda gave him a curious look, most people did their best to avoid Astra and men took one look at her and did their best to keep out of kicking distance.
"Tomas, A-rank." He introduced and since he wasn't using his title and was focusing on his adventurer rank Jayda went with the flow like Astra had told her to.
"Jayda." She greeted, "Also A-rank. You know Astra." Tomas smiled pleased that she was playing along.
Dan walked into the bar where people had gathered drinking tea as it was frowned upon to be drunk while doing a job. "Has everyone checked in?" Dan called even as he turned to a sleepy looking woman who was beside him. She nodded. "Alright, there are two groups here, you will be moving in convoy, yes the Merchant guild has paid the fee for the groups to be combined." He informed, it meant part of the wages the adventurer group were getting was paid for by the Merchant Guild and if anything happened to them it would affect their purse.
"The 3 A-ranks will be in charge of the convoy, I warn you now, two of them are actually S-rank in power so don't piss them off." Dan added as he glanced to a pair of B-ranks who were from out of town and were incidentally in C-ranked parties hired by the merchants.
"Adventurer group will wear yellow armbands for the first leg so that you can get used to each other and identify groups." The sleepy woman called as she dumped the yellow arm bands on Astra, Jayda, and Tomas's table.
People walked forward and grabbed yellow armbands, Tomas didn't even react when his daughter reached forward to take hers and all she did was nod hello to the leaders like the others. The staff member handed Astra, Jayda, and Tomas yellow bands with a black line down the centre, it marked them as the leaders. Astra took a moment to tie Jayda's arm band on and when that was done Jayda did it for her then turned to tie on Tomas's.
"So... who is the big boss?" Tomas asked.
"Let's work in co-operation." Astra suggested.
"Might work but you two have been working together for weeks, you have ideas on how the other works, I do not." Tomas added.
"True," Jayda stood and was followed by the other two. "Yellow armbands over here!" she ordered and the adventurers with the yellow armbands gathered around her. "Okay, so, I get some of you are in parties, but we need to know where you are placed in fighting formations, tanks, vanguards, support, rear guards and scouts." Jayda explained to the group the three other parties would protect the supply and product wagons as well as stay in control of the horses while they would do most of the fighting.
