I awoke early, determined to make breakfast for Amber as a gesture of gratitude for her unwavering support. Heading to the nearby bathroom, I washed my face and brushed my teeth, combing my hair.
As I started cooking, I felt my phone vibrating in my pants. I quickly fished it out and saw that Aunt Leslie was calling. Without hesitation, I answered and placed it to my ear.
"Hey, Y/N, sweetie. I know this might not be the best time, but your uncle and I have decided that you should live in his old apartment near Woodsboro High School."
I took a deep breath, trying to process Aunt Leslie's unexpected news and living alone. It was both thrilling and daunting.
"Auntie, I appreciate your concern, but are you sure?" I asked hesitantly. "I mean, I've never lived alone before, and it might be overwhelming."
Aunt Leslie's voice softened. "I understand your worries, sweetheart. But your uncle believes it's time for you to spread your wings and embark on this new chapter of your life. Plus, it's a great opportunity to experience independence and learn valuable life skills."
"Alright, Auntie," I finally replied, summoning my courage. "I'll do it. I'll move into Uncle's old apartment and embrace this new adventure."
Aunt Leslie's relief was palpable through the phone. "I'm sorry for you to know, but I'm so proud of you."
"I know, Auntie. I'll go there after I'm finished with breakfast here. I'll see you later. Love you." I said, not waiting for her to answer, and ended the call.
Settling the food I cooked on a plate and placing it on the table, I heard Amber's voice. "Who's calling you?" she asked, startling me. "Damn it, Ambs! Don't do that again!" I exclaimed, caressing my chest as I looked at her, surprised.
"Well, sorry about that, and good morning, scaredy cat," she teased me. Seeing the food on the table, her eyes widened. "Wow, you never told me you cook?"
"Well, it's a part of surviving, too, especially since I'll be moving to my apartment soon," I said, smiling at her reaction.
We sat at the table, savoring the aroma of the freshly cooked food. As we dug into the meal, Amber asked again, "So, about my question earlier?"
"Oh, it's just my uncle. He told me his old apartment is free, so it's okay for me to live there." Amber looked at me, surprised. "You'll live alone?"
I nodded, feeling nervous. "Yeah! It's a chance for me to explore my independence, discover new things, and learn how to navigate the challenges of adulthood," I replied.
Amber smiled warmly, reaching across the table to squeeze my hand. "I'll miss you when you move, but it's way closer to the school, so maybe I can visit you sometime." She unintentionally held my hand.
Glancing down at our hands, a pink blush crept over my cheeks. She also noticed it and quickly retreated her hand. "Sorry, just the emotions," she said.
Finishing our breakfast, I grabbed my bag and looked at Amber. "Hey, thanks for letting me crash here last night. I appreciate it."
"Oh, sure. I'll tell the squad why you aren't in class today," she smiled. "Good luck with your new apartment." I smiled, muttering "Thanks" before leaving her house and driving back to Aunt Leslie's house.
As I stopped in front of Auntie's house, I saw her standing on the porch with my things, and Uncle just got out of the house with some of my belongings. "Is this all of my things?" I asked, and Uncle nodded.
