Figure skating is all I've known for the past fifteen years of my life.
It started when I would get off of school and my parents would drive me over to the rink we owned back home in Colorado.
Owning the rink was one thing, but finding the passion was another. And it was all thanks to my "teacher" that I am where I am today.
She was just a college student working part-time whenever she could, but I could see it in her eyes that she loved ice skating. Sometimes she would skate around on her own and I'd be a liar if I didn't say she looked beautiful doing it.
That's when I asked her to teach me.
Little did she know it'd be the beginning of my "obsession" as my friend Julie would say. But little would I know that said teacher would now be an NHL wife to one of the best known hockey players in the industry.
Danielle Zimmerman was my mentor when I was five and Hunter Zimmerman was her boyfriend.
I still keep up with her from time to time and we check up on each other, so I guess you could say I indirectly know a worldwide celebrity.
Well I know his wife, but that's my little secret.
My knees are soft as I glide around the ice, my hands red and cold. Braden is right next to me and I place my hand in his, continuing our routine as per usual.
I can't help but glance at my little rival on ice as she chats with Vita. They keep glancing over and I can spot Stella's pleading eyes from a mile away.
She's up to something.
And as the music concludes I don't take any more time to find out. I don't ignore the way Vita's face lights up and how Stella's eyes bore into mine with complete hatred.
"What's all the staring for?" I ask, coming to a stop in front of them.
"Stella believes she's good enough to skate with Braden." Vita announces and my face turns bitter.
Good enough? She can't be serious.
"Coach, you're joking right?" I almost want to laugh but Vita's presence makes me think otherwise.
Stella and I have been in this "friendly" competition ever since I've gotten here. If you could even call it friendly.
Braden and Stella used to be partners before I showed up. Shocker. I know.
There was some obvious tension between the two of them. Choreography was rushed, their rhythm wasn't synced, and to be honest, I don't think she was up to par with him.
Vita realized that and placed me as his partner instead. We instantly clicked and it's stayed that way for three years.
Don't get me wrong, Stella's a good skater. But I have no shame in saying I'm better because I've proved it on many accounts.
Every few months or so Stella will beg Vita to compete with me and show her that she's finally ready to step it up.
And it's during these competitions where I show her she's not. I hate losing, but I don't know what I'd do with myself if I succumbed to her level and she beat me.
Stella hasn't busted her ass enough to gain the opportunity to skate with Braden. I respect him and I respect myself enough to always give Stella a chance she doesn't deserve.
