Good Looking - Suki Waterhouse

Evie

"And residents, get ready to bundle up this week. One of the earliest winter storms to date is expected to hit this weekend."

Throwing my bag over my shoulder, I listen to the weatherman on the TV, the early morning broadcast left on by someone else in this house.

"Snow plows will be out in the morning as Boston residents are guaranteed four to five inches of snow throughout the week."

Guess I'm going to have to pull out my coat from the depths of my closet.

I turn the TV off before I leave and walk to the dining hall to grab something to eat on the way to class.

It's a gloomy looking day outside. Clouds in the sky, even darker ones rolling in. The leaves, though a range of yellows and oranges, are starting to get blown off the branches.

It's a quick walk to the dining hall, no longer than five minutes. But when I enter I don't expect the amount of eyes to be focused on me.

I give the attention a sliver of my mind before officially calling it weird. Because when I say I have hundreds of eyes on me, I mean it.

Even the workers serving the food were looking at me weird. Or maybe that's just my imagination, but everyone else was.

Most people were just blatantly staring at me and it honestly creeped me out. I try to ignore it as best I can, but now people are whispering to their friends.

Okay, is there something I'm missing here?

I spot Jane at a table with her friends and as she turns to look at me, her friends pull her back. I sit down at a separate table by myself and at this point think I'm being paranoid.

"Jane, don't." I hear her name and look up from my food to see her forcing herself away from her friends.

I smile at her like I always do as she walks over, but the look on her face is far from the joy I know she has in herself.

She sits down across the table from me, her demeanor as if her parents just died or something. "I'm so sorry Evie," she starts and all I'm left to sit in is confusion.

"Sorry for what?" I ask and take another brief look around. "Why does it feel like everyone's looking at me?" I fixed my hair just in case and even wiped my forehead to see if something was there.

There was nothing.

"You...you haven't seen it?" Jane questions me back as if I've missed gossip so important I must've been living under a rock.

"Seen what?"

She goes silent for a moment, the pity on her face only intensifying. Jane swipes through her phone until she turns it to me.

When I see the picture on her screen I feel like throwing up. The caption, as degrading as it is, makes me want to run and hide. Everything about the post is surreal as it all starts to make sense.

And everything comes crashing down for me.

The hashtag is my last straw before I push the phone away from me. "Who posted that?" My voice is tense, it's deliberate as I begin to take in what I just saw.
