I would love to say that the first few days of dating Alexander Grant were rainbows and unicorns.

But if I did I'd be lying.

And I really need to stop lying.

So truthfully, the first few days have been filled with thunderstorms, coughs, bed rotting, and a whole lot of tissues.

I don't know where all the symptoms came from but I had my one moment with Alex and then the universe decided that was all I was going to get.

But I guess it wouldn't have mattered if I was sick or not. The hockey team had a couple away games this week so Alex wasn't really around despite the fact.

And now that he is, I've been careful when I'm around him. I told him I wanted to watch him play the next time they were home, and that meant not getting him sick.

Which I abruptly failed at when I heard him hack up a lung last night over the phone.

My symptoms have dwindled to a cough and a few sneezes here and there, and since Jane has been covering for me all week I decided to do her a favor and go back to work.

It was a boring day. I checked out three or four people and spent the rest of my time doodling on post-it notes or watching Netflix.

In the middle of closing up for the night my phone starts ringing with a call from someone I didn't expect.

"Matt?" I'm the first to talk.

"Yeah," he sounds panicked. "Hey, are you around right now or busy?"

"I just finished my shift, why?" I ask him, not liking where this is headed.

"Can you get to the house? Quickly." he says. "Alex passed out at practice."

The information hits me in the gut. "He what!?" My voice raises as I lock the front doors behind me. "Is he okay?" My voice is rushed as I sling my bag over my shoulder.

"He's fine, just clearly sick. But he keeps saying he's okay and doesn't want to stay at home." I hear Matt heave a sigh. "I need you to babysit him."

"Back to my old job aren't I?" I joke but pick up my pace in the direction of their house. "I'll be there in ten."

There's a million things on my mind as I speed over to Alex's house. I know Matt said he was okay but I heard him over the phone yesterday.

And if it's gotten to the point where he's passed out, I'm nothing but worried.

I walk up the porch steps in a hurry and almost trip while opening the front door, "Matt?" I called out immediately.

He comes in from the living room as I shut the door behind me. "He's in his room. Make sure he stays there." Matt emphasizes that last part. "He seriously doesn't want to miss practice, Evie."

I sigh and drop my stuff on the small hallway table. "Sounds like him."

"I have to get going, but while we're all gone just try to get him to stay put. We don't need to have him out for multiple games because he won't rest."

I nod at him. "Got it. I'll see you guys in a few hours, yeah?"

Matt nods back before leaving and I make my way down the hallway and into Alex's room. He's rummaging through his closet when I enter, "Alex."

He turns to me and there's only surprise expressed on his face. "He called you?"

"Yeah, he called me." I walk up to him and place the back of my hand to his forehead. He's burning up. "Sit down Alex."
