~Flashback~
September 26th.
Amity Blight, age 13, sits at a lunch table with her cheerleader friends. She zones out for a bit, before the blonde girl sitting across from her snaps her fingers in the Blight's face.
"Huh?" Amity asks, snapping out of her trance. The girl huffs. "We're trying to plan our next prank for the new girl. We already put the water bucket above her locker in Gym. What should we do next?" she asks. Amity looks over at the new student sitting alone in the corner of the cafeteria.
A girl with brown curly hair, tan skin, and caramel-colored eyes. Her head was held down towards the brown paper bag before her, which went unopened as she continued to stare at it.
Amity shrugs. "Leave her alone? She's only been here for a couple of days. You're acting like a stereotypical cheerleader, not to mention a total bitch."
The other girls gasp softly, while the leader glares at Amity. "And you're not acting like a very good friend. Keep up this little attitude and I have no problem dropping you as a friend. And then, you'll have no one."
Amity rolls her eyes. "My math scores keep the pom poms in your hands. I'm pretty sure you need me more than I need you. And what's your obsession with the new kid? The last time you worked this hard to torment someone, it was because you had a crush on them."
The others say nothing because, as usual, Amity was right. But the leader huffs again. "You know what, I'm done with you. You're not allowed to sit with us until you apologize."
The bell rings, and Amity quickly stands up. "Fine, good luck passing your classes without me."
~The Next Morning~
Amity walks into school that day chewing a piece of gum from her pencil case and immediately goes to her locker to grab her books for her morning classes. While grabbing her math notebook out of her backpack, her ex-friend from the day before appears in front of her.
"Amity."
"Lexi." Amity replies, pulling her english notebook out of her bag. Lexi clears her throat. "I'm here to give you a chance to apologize for your attitude yesterday."
Amity glances at her, not saying anything. Lexi continues. "You were really rude to me. So I believe you owe me an apology."
Lexi holds out her hand, closing her eyes as she waits for Amity's apology. Amity closes her locker after grabbing the last of her supplies. She pulls her gum out of her mouth and places the slimy wad into the blonde's hand and closes it, patting the cheerleader on the shoulder. "You need this more than I do." the Blight whispers before walking away.
~At Lunch~
Amity walks into the cafeteria holding a gray and pink lunch bag. She starts to walk towards her normal table. Lexi smirks. "Well well well well well. Look who came crawling baaaaaa..."
But Amity walks past them to the table in the corner, where the new student sits by herself. Amity clears her throat, watching the tanned girl look up at her. "Hey, mind if I sit with you?"
After a moment's hesitation, the girl shakes her head, and Amity takes a seat across from her. She opens her lunch bag and pulls out a green juice box, before groaning softly. "Darn it. I accidentally grabbed one of my brother's juice boxes. You want it?" The Blight asks. The girls look at her. "U-uh... sure."
Amity hands over the juice box. The girl mumbles a small 'thank you' before poking the straw through the foil hole. After taking a sip, she looks at Amity. "You don't like Apple Juice?" she asks. Amity shrugs. "It's alright. I prefer Orange Juice, honestly. It tastes better. And," Amity leans closer and whispers "oranges are better for fake boobs."
The girl across from her snickers, which evolves to a giggle, and grows into a laugh. Amity watches in amusement, laughter slowly coming over her as well. The tan girl takes a deep breath. "You're one to talk about fake boobs."
"Ah, so you've noticed." Amity says playfully, crossing her arms over her chest. "Yup, my mom wasn't very good at loving her kids, but she was good at giving her daughters disproportionate body shapes."
The two girls laugh. Amity takes a deep breath. "So, I haven't seen you around before. Are you new?" she asks, already knowing the answer. But whatever changes the subject.
"Yeah." The tan girl nods. "New in school, new in my neighborhood." she says. "Me and my parents just moved in last week after an incident at my last school. Though, I might have to be homeschooled if those cheerleaders don't leave me alone."
Amity glances back at the table of cheerleaders, all of which angrily stare down the two girls. "Yeah... those girls are the worst."
"You're telling me. Yesterday, they put a glitter bomb in my locker."
Amity gasps. "Tell me you're lying!"
The girl shakes her head. "Nope. I got home after and my parent said I looked like an art project."
Amity starts to snicker, covering her mouth in an attempt to hide it. The girl across from her pouts. "Hey, don't laugh!" she whines slightly. Amity giggles. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry. You're right, it's not that funny." she says, finally opening her lunch box and pulling out a small plastic bag filled with baby carrots.
"No way, you have carrots!" The tan girl says, reaching into her brown paper bag and pulling out a similar plastic bag with celery inside. "I'll trade you."
"Hell yeah!" Amity says, swapping vegetables. "I love celery." She reaches into her bag, pulling out a small container. "Especially with Peanut Butter."
The girl on the other side of the table reaches into her bag and pulls out her own container of Peanut Butter. "And carrots with Peanut Butter."
The two laugh and start to eat their vegetables. After a minute or so, the tan girl starts to speak.
"H-hey... Um... Do you wanna maybe be friends?" She asks nervously. Amity looks at her, confused. "Huh?"
"W-well..." The girl blushes. "I've never really had a friend before, and you're the first person at this school to talk to me without asking me to pick up their eraser, and you're really nice and I'd really like to be friends if that's okay!"
Amity stops for a moment to think. "Hm... Sure, I'll be your friend, but only if you can answer this one question."
The girl nods quickly. Amity reaches into her pencil case and pulls out a small pink eraser, tossing it onto the table in the direction of the girl across from her.
"...Can you pick up my eraser for me?"
The girl bursts into a fit of giggles, picking up the eraser and handing it back to her. After a moment, she takes a deep breath. "So, new friend. Do I get to know your name?"
Amity smiles, holding out her hand for a shake. "Amity Blight. You?"
The girl smiles and shakes her hand.
"Luz Clawthorne-Whispers."
