Monday is here. It is now normal for the younger accountant to rush past the cubicles on his left as he aims for his space. Today, all eyes are on him and the first thing he does once inside his compartment is to look down for a while.
To Miss Mary: Damn....Eish. Everyone is looking at me. Sup.
He taps on the send icon.
To Miss Mary: Good morning.
If she's not in the bathroom, she's on her way to the office. Or....She's contemplating on what to reply. Koke gives up on waiting for the manager's response. He puts his phone into his pocket before staring at the space not beyond the pane.
The day unfolds with colleagues coming into his office to outspeak their pity for him for passing through a trying time like this one. He thanks some and tells the others that it is a matter of time until he's done with this mischance. Up to now, there's not even a single buzz from his phone. The manager is yet to appear at the office. Unless she isn't working today, something very unusual.
The day goes by without glances between the junior accountant and the woman who promises to be there for him, anytime. Koke receives nothing like a message from Mary to explain the sudden shift.
It is now 5 pm, the departure time for most employees at the company. Koke is punctual and principled with his time. He waits for no minute to pass the hour mark. Shifting within his workspace, he starts to pack up to leave when his gadget finally receives a message.
Halima: Hi Koke.
Please, if you don't mind, meet me in the ladies' restroom at 6 pm.
I know this is ridiculous but I swear, I'll keep my hands to myself.
No stupidity.
Please Koke, I just wanna tell you something.
Sincerely, I promise not to act stupid.
Please.
6 pm.
Ladies' restroom.
To Miss Mary:
No.
He opts to call her instead.
Dead end.
She texts back not the whole day and now she isn't picking up a call. The same person who promises to be there for him anytime.
Meanwhile, Halima is back.
Koke stares blankly at the black monitor screen while his legs move in sync with no music. His back is leaning against the chair and his index finger lies between his nostrils and upper lip. He checks on the time.
5:24 p.m.
Mary is yet to call. Yet to come and be there for him. Yet to give him some assurance. The space is getting empty with every minute dying.
He won't wait for other interruptions to his always smart and spotless schedule. He gets to his feet firmly, settling his bag onto the seat. He grabs his phone and keys calmly prior to exiting the cubicle, closing and locking it.
He heads first to the male section of the washrooms and stands quietly in one of the compartments.
5:58p.m
To Halima: You're there?
Halima: Yes, come.
And just like that, he makes a confident and cunning walk into the ladies'. He stops at the beginning of a short small-spaced alley, his neck turning once.
