The year was 1536.
Caitlyn and Jayce were five and seven. Children of Piltover. Caitlyn was the daughter of Tobias and Cassandra Kiramman, the King and Queen of Piltover. Although she was a princess, she tended to not play her part. Her friend Jayce was the son of their Butler and Maid, Ximena and Rutherford Talis.
All was well.
Caitlyn and Jayce had been playing in the garden with a couple of dolls when out burst the King and the Queen in a heated argument. Cassandra had been crying and Tobias' face was nearly as red as a tomato. The two innocent faces watched the scene as the conversation began to get more heated.
"You couldn't possibly believe those rumors, Tobias!" Cassandra wailed, "The Duke, he's been trying to get rid of me for years!"
"Enough!" Tobias shouted in return, "I will not run this kingdom with a hand whore by my side! I won't do it!"
"Admit it, Tobias... it's because I couldn't give you a male heir. I can't give you anymore children." Cassandra fell to her knees and wailed into her hands.
"Don't be ridiculous!"
"It's true! You can't in good conscience let Caitlyn rule the kingdom, you monster! You would have me thrown to the wolves because I can no longer produce?! That makes me less of a woman?!"
"If Caitlyn could find herself a decent spouse when she becomes of age, I'll reconsider." The King had the Queen's jaw in his grasp, "Otherwise, stay out of my sight!" He let her go and walked back inside slamming the doors.
Cassandra continued to cry on her knees on the back patio. Caitlyn watched as her mother cried over a man. A man that thought less of her over a silly rumor.
"Jayce, we should speak to her," she said, "Mother doesn't look too well."
"Perhaps we should continue playing elsewhere," Jayce said, "We shall leave her be. The front garden has plenty more room. Or if you're too cold, I believe my mother has finished tidying up the front."
"It is a bit cold, I must say..."
The two children picked up their toys and walked into the house through another way. Caitlyn had always been told to leave business like that to the adults. Even if it resulted in death.
Caitlyn and Jayce ran in between servants and maids to get to the living room. The innocent children they were, "Miss, be careful running!" Mrs. Talis shouted, "You could break something!"
"Sorry, mother!" Jayce shouted back as Caitlyn jumped onto the sofa.
Ximena walked in looking at her son then the little girl jumping. Oh, how happy the two of them were, unknown of a single worry they would have in the future. The hyperactivity in their personalities would slim down to be calm and proper as soon as they reached teenage years.
"Talis, what have I told you about allowing the children on the furniture?" The King himself asked looking at the two hyper children, "If Caitlyn were to fall and break something, I would have your ass."
"Yes, sir," Ximena said bowing at his majesty, "I will get right on it."
Tobias left the room and Ximena looked at the two children with a cold stare. Once they made eye contact, they sat down immediately. Once you were locked into the mother stare of Ximena Talis, there was no escaping, "Now be careful on the furniture," she said, "You heard the king."
"Yes, miss." Caitlyn said with a smile.
"Give me your shoes, you two have been out in the garden."
The children kicked off their shoes and went back to playing with the dolls. As Mrs. Talis walked out of the living area, the Queen walked in sniffling. Her eyes were puffy and bloodshot from crying. Caitlyn couldn't keep her mouth shut this time.
"Mother, are you alright?" She asked.
Cassandra looked at her and smiled, "Yes, dear," she said, "All is fine. I-I just need a bath." Then she walked out.
"Um, maybe she'll be okay," Jayce said reassuring his friend, "Would you like to keep playing?"
"No, it's getting a bit dark out."
"Oh, alright, I'll put these away in your room." Jayce took the dolls in his arms and ran up the stairs.
Caitlyn yawned and pulled her knees up to her chest. She rested her chin on her knees as Mr. Talis walked into the room, "Oh, what's with the frown?" He asked.
"Mother seems upset," The little girl said, "She and father were outside having a horrible fight earlier."
"I'm sure her majesty is alright. She'll be back on her feet tomorrow."
Caitlyn nodded and got up from the sofa walking upstairs to her bedroom. Jayce was still in there tidying things up for her and she just stood there waiting for him to leave, "You don't have to tidy up my room," the little girl said, "I am perfectly capable of doing this myself."
"It's respect," Jayce said, "I should get some rest now." He walked out closing the door and leaving a faint crack.
Caitlyn changed into her night gown and found herself falling into a deep slumber.
~~~A Few Days Later~~~
"Caitlyn, how well did you sleep?" A voice asked as Caitlyn wiped her eyes, "Well, I hope."
"Father?" Caitlyn asked looking at the familiar face opening the drapes, "Where's mother? She's been in her bedroom since the other day."
"She's a bit ill, I believe. You shall see her tomorrow where hopefully she is better."
"I hope so. What were the two of you fighting about?"
"Oh, adult business, darling. Nothing serious. Now, get ready, draw yourself a bath, dear."
As the King walked out of her bedroom, Caitlyn felt as if he was a bit too happy about the fact the Queen was ill. Maybe he knew she would get better soon and he couldn't get that off his mind. That didn't sound right after the disagreement Caitlyn witnessed between them. Maybe Jayce would know something.
Caitlyn put on her slippers and left her room to go downstairs. Mrs. Talis had been sweeping the halls while Jayce was sitting on the sofa in the living area reading a book, "Jayce, could I have a word with you?" Caitlyn asked.
"Sure," Jayce said closing his book allowing his friend to sit next to him, "What is it that you need?"
"Would you happen to know anything about my mother? She's been in her room for some days, father says she's stricken with illness, but something doesn't feel right."
"You are far too young to be worrying about the adults, miss. Maybe you should get prepared for the tutor to come over to help with your maths." Jayce opened the book and started where he left off.
Maybe it was nothing....
