Adam! Adam! "Adam!" Julie shouted, shaking him awake. He did his best to open his eyes, but it was like they weighed a thousand pounds. "Oh good! You're awake! Bartholomew is coming!" She whispered. Adam felt a surge of anger rush through his body, and he sat up. He could hear booming footsteps in the hallway, coming closer. He tried to get in front of Julie, but she pushed him out of the way. The door creaked open, and their old enemy stood in the doorway. "Hello, children. I see you have grown. What are you now, sixteen?" He grinned. Julie tightened her jaw and clenched her fists. Adam couldn't help but feel like how he did last summer. Julie being the strong, brave one while he was a coward in the corner, wimpier than a bunch of girls. This year was going to be different. She didn't like wimpy Adam. She didn't almost kiss wimpy Adam. But she did almost kiss brave Adam. "What are you now, 85?" Julie teased. Adam couldn't help but smile. If anyone was good with comebacks, it was her. "So, you and Adam are a—what do they say— 'thing' now?"
Adam never liked Bartholomew, but him bringing up stuff between Adam and Julie was too much. "No, we're not. What would you know about relationships? Your wife is a stupid mutant monster-making poison." Julie defended. Bartholomew looked as if he'd been punched in the stomach. Adam guessed that his wife was a touchy subject.
Bartholomew inhaled sharply. "I suggest you two rest well and eat lots. Tomorrow you have a big day." He wore an evil grin, and two men came in with plates completely covered with delicious food. A potato soup, biscuits, and glasses of milk. "Eat well." Bartholomew advised as he left the room.
"I don't know if we should eat it..." Julie hesitated. Adam knew he should be smarter than to take food from the bad guy, but he was very hungry. He took a bite out of a biscuit and relief spread through his body. "IF WE DIE, WE DIE VERY SATISFIED! THIS IS DELICIOUS!" He gasped. Julie giggled, and took a bite out of one of her biscuits. Her face flooded with pure comfort. "I don't know what they put in these, but I feel like I could run a million miles! Or sleep for a million hours.. she yawned. Adam felt the same. The warm, soft texture gave him such comfort that he felt like he could lift a bus, but also have the best sleep ever in the bus's seats. And bus seats aren't all that comfortable! Without a second thought, they continued to eat, and eventually their plates and bowels were empty.
"Best meal ever!" Julie smiled. Adam nodded, having the sudden feeling that his eyelids were very heavy. Julie's eyes blinked once and she slumped over, asleep. Seconds later, so did Adam.

Adam woke up the next day in a different cell. It had a wooden interior and in the ceiling, you could see cracks of daylight as if you were below deck on an old ship. He could hear cheering outside, and the muffled sound of someone talking into a mic.
He looked around the room, and couldn't see Julie anywhere. "Julie..? Julie!?" Panic ran through him. What had that skunk, Bartholomew done with her?
He ran over to the door of the room, where there was a small window to look out. Outside, he could see a large pen full of sand. The type you would see when someone's dodging bulls or something. But, instead of an open sky, there were chains blocking the top, as if something would try and escape through there. A crowd surrounded the ring on large bleachers, and Bartholomew sat on a high stand next to an old elderly man, Adam could swear he recognized.
The man held up his hand and the crowd went dead silent. Bartholomew stood and grabbed a mic in front of him. "Hello, everyone!" He bellowed. "I'm so glad you could make it! As you all know, when our experiment on the wolf-horse hybrid escaped a young boy and three young girls took her. We've wanted our revenge desperately, and now we shall receive it!"
The crowd cheered wildly. Adam couldn't believe what he was hearing. And, what was their revenge going to be?
"Bring in the girl!"
On the other side of the ring, two doors like Adam's opened and Julie stumbled out. "JULIE!" Adam called. She looked around the arena, trying to find where Adam's voice came from. "Now bring out the beast!" Bartholomew demanded. Julie looked around the pen, alarmingly, and Adam peered through the hole to see a large gate open, and a sphinx set foot in the pen.
