Adam's stomach felt warm and freezing cold at the same time. He felt like he was falling, and rising at once. He felt in love.
After they kissed for the second time, Julie smiled at him with a look in her eyes, he'd never seen before. Just as she opened her mouth to say more, they heard a strange sound in the bushes around them. "What was that?" Julie said, moving away from Adam, to look around.
The noise sounded like a horses hooves on the forest floor, but they didn't think it could be. Until they were wrong, and it was.
A black horse, with a boy, about eighteen, came out of the bushes, and the boy looked heartbroken. "Josh!?" Julie said, sounding relieved.
"Julie!" The boy, Josh, said, hopping off his horse and hugging Julie.
Adam could feel his face get hot. Who was this boy? Why was he hugging Julie? Who was he to Julie? "What are you doing here? Where's Alex? Is she okay? Did she make it home? Where's Juniper and Mable? Please just tell me what's going on!" She questioned, completely ignoring the fact that Adam had no idea who this Josh was.
"Calm down! It's okay!" Josh said, setting his hands on her shoulders. Adam felt the sudden urge to punch this guy. "Mable and Alex are on their way home. They're going to be fine. Juniper went missing and we don't know where she is."
Adam felt deep down that this guy wasn't all that good. Behind that charming smile, he held a secret. Adam was going to find out what it was. "Where are they heading home from? Were they in the arena too? Were they still at the lab? GIVE ME DETAILS!" She shouted, shaking him by the shoulders.
"They were at the arena looking for you guys. We got chased out and when Mable found out you guys escaped, she sent me looking for you." He answered, taking her hands and dropping them off his shoulders.
"So, now what are you going to do with us?" Adam asked, eyeing him up suspiciously.
"Take you home!" He said, as if it were completely obvious.
"Oh thank you!" Julie sighed, hugging him. Adam wondered what her past with this guy was. He hoped it was anything but a relationship.
Josh whistled and another black horse came trotting out of the bushes, tied to the first horse's saddle. "C'mon, lets go." Josh instructed, as he hopped on the lead horse. Adam got on the other one, and Julie sat behind him.
It felt nice riding through the forest. Julie wrapped her arms around him, and eventually she rested her head on his shoulder. "We're going home, Adam.. we're finally going home." She smiled. Adam nodded, but felt a small pang of sadness, thinking of how they'd barely see each other during the winter.
After about an hour of riding, Adam asked, "So, who's this Josh?" hoping she'd say cousin or something like step-brother.
"Oh! He's Alex's boyfriend." She gushed. A wave of relief washed over Adam. "Actually, she kind of broke up with me." Josh admitted, looking very guilty for something.
"Why? You guys were so happy!" Julie gasped.
"You might want to be on the ground for this.." he sighed.
Julie and Adam dismounted, knowing something was wrong. "My grandfather is the old man who was sitting beside Bartholomew. He's basically the president of the entire company..." he stopped, to look up at Julie. "At first, I was only getting to know her because I wanted to bring you, Adam, Mable and Alex to my grandfather, but then it turned to real love. I promise I'm not like that now!" He struggled.
"You lied to Alex.. you lied! HOW COULD YOU DO THAT TO HER!? NO WONDER SHE DUMPED YOU, YOU CLUMP OF DIRT, VIOLATED BY HORSE POO!" She screamed.
"Julie, eventually I truly loved her-"
"LIAR!" She screeched, sending an echo across the forest.
"Julie-" he started, stepping toward Julie.
"Don't touch her." Adam demanded, gripping his wrist. "Where were you really leading us, Josh?" He scolded.
"I'm sorry.." Josh sighed.
"WHERE WERE YOU LEADING US?" Adam shouted, kneeing Josh in the gut. Josh fell to the ground, and whimpered, "to some of my grandfather's workers.."
"Alex and I thought we could trust you. She brought you to help her find me, and turns out, you were probably happy your grandfather had me!" She screamed.
"I-"
"Enough excuses, man!" Adam shouted, pinning Josh against a tree.
"You might wanna get your hands off me." Josh instructed.
"Oh, I don't think I will." Adam grumbled. Josh kicked him in the...in the "basement" and punched him in the jaw.
Adam fell to the ground, in pure pain. "Now do you think you will?" Josh laughed.
"Nope!" Julie shouted, catching him off guard and punching Josh in the side of the face. Josh fell down, and she punched him in the nose. "That's for my sister! The first was for my boyfriend. Now, should I get vengeance for myself? You lied to me too!" She giggled, like a maniac. Josh shook his head, and as she walked over to Adam, she kicked Josh in the... "basement."
She helped Adam to his feet, and kissed him on the cheek. "You're pretty hot when you're mad." He flirted.
"Oh, shut up."
They each hopped on a individual horse, and continued to ride toward their home. They rode for about an hour and a half, of galloping for a minute, and then trotting for a minute, they stopped for a break. "So, when we go back to school.. what do we tell people? Are they going to believe the gas stopped naturally, or do we say that we stopped it?" Adam asked, as they sat on a log. The sun was setting, and Adam and Julie felt exhausted and hungry. "I don't know..we'd have to talk to Mable and Alex about that." she yawned.
"I think we should stop here for the night. We don't want to travel through this forest in the dark." He advised. Julie nodded. "We should start a fire. Got any matches?" She sighed.
"Nope. Ooh! Check the horse's saddle bag!" Adam chimed. He got up, and checked his horse's saddle bag. "Yes!" He shouted.
"Awesome! I'll find a clearing we can set up at nearby." Julie decided. Adam nodded, and rummaged through the bags to see what else was there and he found a small flashlight along with a pocket knife. He took them out, and followed Julie to find somewhere to make a fire.
They found a small space in the trees, where it was safe to have a fire and they dug a small hole with their hands for a fire pit. Adam piled leaves and bark, with some twigs on top to light, and using the matches, he began a fire.
Julie found large sticks and broke them, and continued feeding the fire with them. "I'll see what I can find for food." Adam stated.
"Okay, just please be careful."Julie sighed.
He walked for a few minutes, heading to where he thought he saw a large clearing, where there could be berries, and when he got there, he couldn't believe his eyes. "Julie!" He shouted.
"What!?" She replied, with worry in her voice.
"Come here!"
She hurried over, and couldn't believe her eyes either. "We're home."
