The ladies wasted no time. They stumbled up the rock steps as quickly as their heels would let them. The beam from the flashlight bobbled about but lent enough light so that the trio did not fall flat on their faces. They came to a heavy old door with large metal latches. Hadley pushed, and the doors parted. The silvery moon lit up the night. The three of them stood in the fresh air.

"Where are we?" Maury asked.

"It looks like we're near that cottage we thought might belong to the owner of the place," said Hadley. "Come on, girls! Maybe we can get help there."

"Are you so sure? Let's go back to our room," Maury said. "I've had enough partying for one night. We'll get in the car and go home."

A twig broke behind them. Someone stumbled. They heard a man shout. Another shot rang out.

"Blumbuster," Hadley said. "We'll never make it to our cottage without being spotted. Here, through these woods."

She led the other two toward the larger cottage.

"It looks deader than a doornail," Lou Edna said. "I don't think anybody's home."

Hadley walked up to the door.

"What the heck are you doing?" Maury asked. "That's breaking and entering! That is illegal!""

"It is not! We're not going to STEAL anything. Besides, I'm not breaking into anything. The backdoor's open."

She opened the door. Standing in the entryway, she waited for the other two to join her.

More cursing. This time, the male voices sounded closer.

"Don't argue with me! Just get your butts inside," Hadley said. "If we're lucky, there's a working phone in here somewhere, and we can call the cops."

Maury and Lou Edna scooted inside. Hadley softly closed the door behind them.

"Who do you think lives here?" Lou Edna whispered.

"I don't know," Hadley said. "And I don't want to find out."
