The band had finished, Justin had gone to get the car and the girl was waiting outside the entrance. Dimitri was watching her from above. The girl looked at her phone after it buzzed and sighed. She started walking down the street, alone. Where was Justin, where was the car? There was no time for answers because Dimitri had to follow her.
Dimitri couldn’t believe it as he jumped from rooftop to rooftop, shadowing her. She was going to walk home alone while wearing...what she was wearing. She was. Dimitri looked ahead, searching for any dangers. There was an alley, pitch black to human eyes. There was something about that alley, a bad feeling hanging over it.
Dimitri willed he girl to keep walking when she stopped in front of the alley. Willed her and willed her but it was all in vain. She stepped into the alley and was immersed in black.
Dimitri made to follow her but accidentally slipped on a wet patch from the rain from the night before. He fell backward and cracked his head on the cement. Complete blackness and silence for all of, maybe five or ten minutes. Then his eyes opened and his head felt fine. He sat up and saw that his blood had pooled around where his head had been.
There was a piercing scream and then he remembered, the girl. Dimitri rose and dashed to the edge of the roof. He looked down and saw four hulking men, no, werewolves looming over the girl’s crumpled, bloody form. No! Why had Dimitri taken his eye off of her for one second?
The wolves moved towards her, and that was as far as they were going to go. Dimitri pulled his hood down, low over his face and fell to the ground. He landed right in the middle of them and before they had even realised he was there he had clasped his hands together and brought them down on one of the wolves necks with a satisfying crunch. Then he grabbed another’s wrist and pushed his elbow forward, a loud crack proved he did it right. The other two tackled him but Dimitri hit them both at the base of their spines, severing them. It was over in the blink of an eye, they were all pulverised and Dimitri hadn’t even broken a sweat.
He looked at the girl, her eyes were unfocused and barely open, she was struggling to stay conscious but then she blacked out and she was still. Dimitri sighed, maybe she would make it.
“Scarlett!” there was a loud screech. “Scarlett, Scarlett no! Wake up!” Daryl was yelling it and he was shaking the body of the girl who must have been Scarlett. Dimitri lunged for him; that idiot. He tried to pry him off her but Daryl refused to let go.
“Stop it! I said stop. You’ll only hurt her more,” Dimitri shouted and then, to his utter astonishment, Daryl actually let go. First time he ever did what Dimitri told him to do. Dimitri looked down at the face of his brother, streaked with tears and his nose running, an unfamiliar sight.
“What do I do? How do I help her? She can’t die” Daryl whispered in despair.
Dimitri sighed, it was times like this when he couldn’t hate his brother, it was times like this when he remembered that his brother wasn’t completely there, or in control of himself. “We have to get her to the hospital.”
Without warning Daryl began to Change. Dimitri let go of him as soon as he realised what was happening. Daryl’s limbs elongated, arms and legs stretching and bending. His thumbs were shrinking and his nails becoming claws. Grey fur erupting all over his body, his face splitting into a ragged muzzle. Once Changed, he let out an echoing howl, which was a custom for werewolves to do.
Dimitri stood before Daryl’s wolf form and tried to understand what he wanted. Daryl bent down and nudged Scarlett with his nose. Dimitri figured he wanted to help her. Dimitri lifted the unconscious girl and placed her on Daryl’s back.
“Don’t drop her,” Dimitri said while he made sure she was secure. Daryl let out a growl as if to say he would never drop her. And then the brothers were off, running at top speed to the hospital.
********************************************************************
Dimitri ended up taking her inside because Daryl couldn’t go in looking like a wolf and he destroyed his clothes back in the alley. Dimitri went in, yelled for help, left her and ran. His mind was raging with so many thoughts it hurt. Was Scarlett going to be okay, was his fight with Daryl over, why were those Wolves after her and was he ever going to have a peaceful day again? He ran past Daryl, past cars and houses and everything, back to the sanctuary of the woods were he could collect his thoughts and sort out why this night had been so strange.
