【HERO】
Click, click.
I turn the handle. Push the motel room's door open and motion after you.
Josephine nods a thanks as she steps inside. She sets her shopping bags—
full of cheap boxers and cheap lingerie—on the oak dresser.
The door swings shut behind us. It shuts out the afternoon light. Turns the bright room dark.
Her expression shifts into one I recognize.
Artist Josephine.
She studies the room like her life depends on it. Finds some nuance in the white walls and the peaches n' cream curtains.
"Hmm." She sets her camera bag on the dresser. "It's workable."
My place would be better.
It's true. But I don't know shit about this model.
I'm not inviting a stranger into our house. Even if it's the perfect way to get Josephine in my bed.
Light floods the tiny room as she pulls the blinds. It bounces off the shiny mirror. Casts highlights over the gold carpet.
Her gaze shifts to me.
That artist gaze.
It's as thrilling as it was the first time.
It's like she's staring into my soul.
Seeing something no one else does.
"I should warm you up." Her voice is even. Careful.
I let mine drop to a low, seductive tone. "Yeah?"
"No." She adjusts something on her massive digital camera. "Well, yeah, actually. Kinda." Her gaze shifts around the room. "Get on the bed."
"Yes, ma'am."
"No sass."
"That wasn't part of the deal."
A laugh spills from her lips. "Fair enough." She motions to the ugly orange comforter. "Help me with these."
"They're not a part of your vision?"
"God no." She pulls away one side of the comforter.
I get the other.
Together, we do away with the hideous orange thing.
The sheets beneath it are plain. White. A blank canvas.
Her gaze fixes on me. Her eyes fill with nervous energy. Like she's not sure if she can handle this.
She wants us to be friends.
I respect that.
But I don't have time to move slow.
I only have three days.
I'm finding the key that unlocks her heart.
Whatever it takes.
"Hero?" she asks.
I take a seat on the bed.
She sets up perpendicular to me. "Good." She brings her camera closer.
Stares through the viewfinder. "Let's start with some portraits."
I nod.
"Be yourself."
"You work with a lot of models?"
"No." Her laugh is more nervous than anything. "Is it that obvious?"
