It's right there on my cell screen.
A picture message from a new number.
Josephine on the bed, her fingers against my cheek, my arms around her waist.
My cock stirs.
It's impatient.
It's cursing my name for not finishing what we started.
It doesn't get that I have to give her time.
That Josephine is worth any wait.
My phone buzzes with her text.
This is Josephine if that isn't obvious. I'm working on these. I probably should have checked that you didn't change your number.
The pan behind me sizzles.
I set my cell on the counter face down. Attempt to keep Josephine in the back of my thoughts. Fail.
Dinner is halfway ready. The rice is done. The veggies are done. Now it's alternating between chicken and tofu (with separate stirring implements, of course).
I try to eat vegetarian with Mercy most of the time. Otherwise, she's the odd one out. But I've consumed enough tofu for one lifetime.
"Mmm. That smells good." Mercy turns from her spot at the dining table.
She's working on something on her laptop. Writing, probably. "Sweet and
sour?"
"You'll see." I stir one more time. Pick up my phone. Stare at the ten digits of Josephine's new number. God, if I'd had this two years ago...
No. That doesn't matter.
No crying over spilled milk.
I have it now.
I'm making this happen.
Period.
I text her back.
Hero: I really could torture you here.
Josephine: You have mercy in your heart.
Hero: Since when?
Josephine: Now, apparently. What do you think?
The phone flashes with another picture message. The two of us kneeling on the bed, staring into each other's eyes like we're madly in love and desperate to fuck.
Hero: It's hot.
Josephine: Oh my God, Hero! What about beyond it's hot?
Hero: Not my expertise.
Josephine: I taught you better than this.
My lips curl into a smile. Her guard is down. She's letting me in.
I need to seize the moment. To grab every ounce of it.
Hero: It's a beautiful image. Light. Like a flashback in a Nicholas Sparks movie.
Josephine: I'm never going to live that down, am I?
Hero: What if I subjected you to three Black Eyed Peas albums?
Josephine: What if?
Hero: Would you ever let me forget it?
Josephine: The Notebook is decent.
Hero: Is it?
Josephine: No Jurassic Park, but yeah. Don't be a snob.
