【HERO】
Our afternoon is exactly what we need.
We clean up. Make lunch. Eat on the patio deck.
Dive into the pool and make out like horny teenagers.
When we're too tired to move, I drag Josephine to my parents' shower.
Pin her against the slick tile wall.
Bury myself in her.
She comes twice.
My name rolls off her lips. It dissolves in the running water as she melts into my arms.
Fuck, she feels good.
Like no one else.
And, trust me, I've tried.
I've tried so fucking hard to find someone who could compare to Jo.
Nobody holds a candle.
Nobody comes close.
AFTER I CHANGE into jeans and a fresh t-shirt, I step into the hallway.
There isn't a single hint of cinnamon in the air.
She isn't downstairs fixing a chai.
She's next door.
In Titan's room.
For the first time in ages, the blinds are drawn.
Sunlight streams through the windows. It bounces off the white walls, the beige carpet, the clean sheets—replaced after Lucas found him.
The entire room is a fucking joke.
This isn't how Titan lived. There's no sign of his Linkin Park posters.
No movie reviews pasted on the walls. No bikini calendar above his messy desk.
The desk isn't even messy.
It's clean as a whistle.
The opposite of Titan.
But Josephine didn't know him.
Only the void he left.
What the hell is she doing sitting on those clean sheets, staring at the ocean?
She turns to me with a sad smile. "Hey."
"Hey."
"We haven't talked about him."
We have. Before. And plenty. But that was a long time ago. "What's there to say?"
"Everything."
"We only have two more hours, baby. You want to spend them like this?"
Her nod is steady. Sure.
I don't know what the hell that has to do with us—there's still so much to figure out—but I trust her.
If this is what she needs, I'm going to give it to her.
"It must hurt," she whispers. "That he's gone."
"Of course."
"How did it happen?"
"I can only guess." Habit threatens to take over. For a while, I told this story again and again. To doctors. Cops. The therapist Mom insisted we see.
It became this rote thing.
I stopped feeling it.
I stopped feeling anything.
