Chapter 7

A dark deed

“So what’s the plan then? We just simply wait till our deaths?” Lily said harshly.

“Well I’d say we could play eye spy, but its pitch black and I’m pretty sure the only things around me are trees.” Jack replied.

Lily stared blankly into the dark void in front of her, this was probably the last thing she’d ever see.

All colours were drained from the world the only thing she could see now was the faint line of objects.

Suddenly the beating of wings echoed throughout the forest, Lily tensed. She waited for the sound to stop but it never did. In fact it only became louder as the trees began to shake violently.

There was a loud thud near to the log where Jack and Lily was sitting, urgently Lily grabbed her torch and switched it on and pointed it to the direction where the sound had come from.

There before her stood Abaddon, his long wings were unfolded as his red demonic eyes stared directly back at her. His long claws were blood stained and his robes were tattered and frayed at the edges.

“Oh my god, is that the guy you was telling me about?” Jack whispered to me.

“Yes… it is” Lily replied back reluctantly.

Abaddon stared at the couple with amusement. He’d travelled across the country watching his pets kill countless numbers of people and now he wanted to cause some more chaos himself.

“You boy, prepare to face my wrath!” Abaddon shouted.

Jack rose up from the log and proceeded to walk to Abaddon. Lily could only watch in horror as she shakily manage to keep hold of the torch while watching Jack walk to his death.

She desperately wanted to tell him to run or at least get away from him but at the moment she was too scared to speak.

Jack stood directly in front of Abaddon staring directly at him.

“Look, kill me if you must but let Lily go” Jack said determined not to show a sign of weakness.

Lily felt the tears well up in her eyes again, he was standing up for her even when he was about to die and it would be her fault. Perhaps if when she’d found Jack they could have kept running maybe they would have lived a little while longer Lily thought.

There was a long pause of silence, Lily was desperately trying to control herself from fainting. The horror and the bloodshed she’d never hoped to see in her life was repeating it’s self in a matter of days.

Jack was about to die and Lily would be soon after, she knew it. All her hopes and dream were over so many things she wanted to achieve in her life would now be impossible.

Lily was just going to accept her fate. She’d always wanted a natural death to die in her sleep or something painless but instead she was going to be ripped apart by the beast that was in front of her.

“I’ll kill you, but I won’t spare her” Abaddon said manically.

Jack turned to face Lily before whispering.

“I’m sorry”

Suddenly Abaddon lunged forward sinking his claws into Jacks flesh and ripping out his heart just in front of Lily. Jack remained motionless as his body collapsed and fell to the floor almost instantly.

Lily had to put her fist in her mouth just to stop herself from screaming.

Her friend Jack had just been mauled apart right in front of her eyes, Lily heart rate increased dramatically. She wasn’t going to pass out she refused to.

Instead Lily crunched her eyes shut and covered her hands with her ears, she didn’t want to see Jacks body and she didn’t want to be here to watch the demon kill her.

Lily waited for the final blow, the one to end her at least. She knew she’d be with Jack and the rest of her family and friends away from this dying world and crazed nightmare.

Lily continued to sit still and wait patiently but Abaddon never attacked. Perhaps he had gone?  Lily wondered. She decided to take a small peak. Reluctantly Lily opened one and I shone the torch in front of her.

He was still standing there, directly in front of Lily staring at her with a bewildered expression.

He met Lily’s gaze almost instantly and spoke in a more calm tone of voice, less angry than before.

“Mortal, why do you not run?” Abaddon asked almost in a curious way.

Lily took a few deep breathes before speaking back.

“There’s no point in it, you’re only going to kill me anyway. And frankly I’d rather get it over with than spend a few more days on this earth by myself fighting for survival.” Lily replied back blankly.

“But isn’t it in human nature to fight to survival no matter the situation?”

“In every situation we’ve faced before hand, there’s always been a glimmer of hope. There’s always been a possibility we’d make it out, but this time there isn’t any. We’ve never faced a threat like you.” Lily said staring in amazement that she hadn’t already been killed yet.

“Hope is only a postponed disappoint anyway” Abaddon muttered.

“It’s just gotten to a point where I give up, my fate is sealed like every other human is” Lily sighed.

“It’s not set in stone mortal.” Abaddon replied.

It wasn’t set in stone? She was going to live? Lily didn’t understand what he’d just said but she didn’t dare question it either.

“Tell me, how would you like to watch the rest of humanity become extinct?” Abaddon asked.

Lily looked up to him with a confused expression, what did that mean? He was going to take her as some pet while she watched the rest of humanity suffer and she was forced to watch knowing she could do nothing?

“I…” Lily was speechless. What was she to do? If she said no she’d be killed instantly but if she agreed she have to watch the murder of thousands or even millions of people just like her.

Could she truly agree to something so dark and horrific that there is no word for? Would she be able to put her own selfish life above others, could she?

“Yes..” Lily spoke. She was disappointed with herself for agreeing to his proposal and even slightly disgusted with herself.

But it was too late now she’d already accepted.

“Your wise mortal, unlike any human I’ve met before this is why I’ve chosen you for this, it will make my time on earth more… interesting…” Abaddon said a small smirk appeared across his face.

“So tell me, have you wanted to visit America?” Abaddon asked.

Lily nodded weakly, she was fascinated with the country she’d always want to visit it but not on these terms.

“Excellent that is our first destination. That reminds me I’d prefer if you called me Abaddon as that is my title after all, if you are disobedient in any way or form I can easily dispose of you. Do not test me” Abaddon said in a more serious tone.

“Yes Abaddon” Lily replied weakly.

“Good, onwards!” Abaddon said as his claws swiped the air in front of him as a rift in the air was created. The rift was no bigger than the size of a man, it glowed with a greyish colour that you could be able to see without the need of a torch.

“This will take us across the Atlantic to America. Mortal, step inside” Abaddon said gesturing to the portal.

Lily rose from the log and stood up, her legs wobbled ever so slightly. Demons and now portals? What could possibly surprise her next she wondered.
