Chapter 16

Understanding

The bright sun shone down as pools of light reflected off the windows and the roof tops of the buildings, below a silence echoed throughout the city as the wind slowly shook the trees. In the far distance colours blurred into one. Giving the feeling that everything Lily saw before her was like an artist’s picture that was created with chalk as all the colour smudges giving off a beautifully created texture.

“If you think this is good it’s nothing compared to the underworld” Abaddon said as he too gazed out at the scenery below him.

“What is it like then? Lots of people burning and screaming in agony while devil like people keep stabbing them?” Lily asked turning to look at Abaddon who was standing next to her.

Abaddon smirked slightly at the comment. “Not quite but it’s a similar sort of thing, apart from your ideas of devil people. I’m the nearest thing you could consider a devil.” He flashed his fangs.” But to your question, there isn’t pits of flames it’s just simply a castle,”

“What like some sort of Dracula gothic style castle?” Lily said resting her elbows on the metal railings.

Abaddon laughed slightly at the comment. “The underworld was here long before that story had even been thought of”

“Well I guess so, how old exactly are you?” Lily said feeling awkward about the space between her and Abaddon was small and that he was only inches away from her.

“Well how old is time?” Abaddon said amused.

“Pretty damn old I’m thinking!” Lily said giggling. She watched as Abaddon laughed himself.

Lily waited for the echoes of laugher to die down before she opened her mouth to speak again. “Don’t you get sort of lonely being by yourself in the underworld and stuff?”

Abaddon’s relaxed happy expression suddenly turned into one more serious. “I... I’ve never really thought about it like that, I don’t suffer the feelings of loneliness that you humans do “

Lily stared off into the distance and watched as the clouds slowly travelled in the sky. “Well surely you must feel something by being by yourself all these years.”

“I’m not by myself” He said quickly “There are millions of your kind’s souls down there even more so now.”

“That’s not what I meant, you don’t hold conversation with them or anything like that do you?” Lily replied.

“No, they just forever moan on about their deaths and complain how they wish to walk on the earth again.” Abaddon said as if feeling sorry for himself.

Lily looked over at him and had the sudden urge to put a hand on his shoulder, he did have emotions and after years of being trapped in the underworld he had became angry and this was his way of letting all his rage out from over the years upon the humans.

She felt the need to show compassion and sympathy towards him, to lean out and said she knew the pain he felt. The Isolation he had felt for so many thousands of years it was all so unjustified.

“What are souls like?” Lily asked wanting to know more about the sort of life Abaddon lived.

“Souls?”  Abaddon repeated like he had been taken back by the question. “Well, when a human dies their souls travel out from their bodies. It’s like a personal ID card that you carry around with you in life, it contains everything about you, from how you look to your personality. But anyways once you die it travels down to me since you all sin far too much to possibly go anywhere else.”
