I had spent eight days living in freedom, on the first night I had remorse. The night after I killed Callum I had cried into my pillow until I realised that wasn't going to bring him back. I had done what I did. It was in the past, the only way to move forward was to forget about it.Or befriend a guy who apparently knew him and then try to solve the case with him despite the fact I know the murderer inside out, along with the fact I know the crime too. Which means I know where not to let Harry look into.
Speaking of, as I walked into school through the back exit, not wanting Lily or any of my other friends to see me, he grabbed my arm and pulled me aside.
He was wearing his leather jacket over his school jumper, his hair was neatly gelled and his eyes looked tired, as though he hadn't got a wink of sleep last night.
"I think it's time we look into our suspects," Harry said, which caught me off guard considering it was 8 a.m. on a Tuesday morning.
"Yeah, sure," I replied calmly, keeping my eyes trained on his blue ones, "Who first?"
"Will? He's at the top of the list," I nodded, to which Harry did as well.
"Where do we start?"
"You two have first period together, right?" I nodded once again, Will and I only had the fact that we both chose a few similar options in common. One of those was my first lesson — geography. "Well, since Will won't be on his guard then maybe you can trick him into telling something,"
"Like what?"
"The fact that he killed his best friend might be an idea. Or any secrets he had."
Will and I weren't close, we had grown up knowing each other since our Mum's were friends, but for the most part we didn't know each other that well.
Although, he seemed to want to talk in geography once I sat down next to him, making the first move towards my freedom. I had decided, if possible, to pin the murder onto him. He was close enough to be believable and it made sense.
Callum always said Will was jealous of him, I thought that he was trying to boost his ego as per usual. Though, the way that Will acted around Callum was different to how he was now.
"So, why did you sit next to me?" Will had never really spoken to me once I got with Callum, before then we occasionally checked in on each other.
"Just wanted to see how you are since Callum," I replied calmly, moving my attention from the boring worksheet towards him, "How are you?"
Will shook his head, "Not great. I keep talking about him though he's still here. The bench on the playground is going to be converted into a memorial, my Dad said as much and since he's on the school board I'd believe it. This place feels empty without him, Y'know?"
I nodded, sort of knowing what he meant. Callum was loud, he made a lot of noise. Disrupting class or just messing around with his mates on the playground, it was impossible to ignore him.
That was one of the things that drew me to him before we started dating; his magnetic charm.
"I know what you mean. It feels dull without him, even some of the girls have said as much," Lily had said it the first day he was gone, that was the only time he was brought up without his death being spoken about. I bit my cheek in thought, before deciding to delve deeper, "Do you have any ideas who did it? Anyone who would've wanted him dead?"
Will shook his head vehemently, almost as though he had something to hide, "No,"
He was lying.
"Will, I've known you since I was five. I know how your first fish died because you accidentally forgot to feed it," I sighed, "I know when your lying,"
