THE BOARDING HOUSE

Despite Enzo making him miserable at every turn, Damon had been in a surprisingly good mood since yesterday. He couldn't quite pinpoint the source of his happiness—was it the events of the previous day, or perhaps Matilda's news?

As he made his way downstairs, he spotted Enzo sitting and drinking.

"Day drinking, are we?" Damon asked, not particularly caring for the answer.

Enzo sassed back, "Well, after beating you black and blue, I got quite the thirst. So I thought, why not?"

On any other day, that comment would have bothered Damon, but today was different. Today, everything he had worked for seemed to be coming together. Finally, Katherine would see that she chose the wrong brother.

Or so he thought.

Enzo, observing the glee on Damon's face, could guess what was going through his mind.

A part of Enzo wanted to spare Damon from the impending pain, to tell him the truth about whatever was coming his way. But he remembered what his "little fire" had told him—Damon needed to learn his lesson the hard way.

Just as Enzo was about to ask Damon a question, a knock at the door interrupted them.

He turned to Damon. "Expecting anyone?"

Damon shook his head. "Not that I know of. And if it was Matilda, she'd just waltz right in."

Curious, Damon opened the door to see who was there.

To his utter shock, standing before him was a face he never thought he'd see again, a face that left him speechless for perhaps the first time in his life.

"Little Annabelle, how long has it been?" Damon feigned sympathy. "Didn't think you were alive."

Anna didn't really care whether Damon was genuinely concerned or not. She was here for a job and nothing more.

"Nice to see you too, Salvatore," she responded sarcastically.

Anna tried to step inside the manor but was stopped by the barrier on the house. "What the hell? I thought only vampires lived in this house," she said, confused.

"Yes, we do," Damon smirked, clearly enjoying her frustration.

Anna sighed. "Fine, can you get the compelled human you have on your beck and call to invite me in?"

Damon looked smug and was about to respond when both Enzo and Stefan walked in, their presence adding an unexpected twist to the already tense situation.
