Gwen's POV

'Try walking back up!'

Are you crazy?

'Are you crazy?!' I echoed, wobbling on the wall.
'I probably have glue on my shoes or something! If I move, I'll die!'

'I don't think you will! Just try it!' Hobie yelled back.

Dear God, I silently prayed, please don't let me fall!

I slowly raised up my foot...
Moved it in front of me...
And placed it back down.

And I stuck!

I felt like jumping for joy and almost did – before I realized that I still had the rest of the way up.

Damn it.

'Good job! Now do it again!' Hobie shouted.

I winced. The last thing I needed was for someone to hurt my eardrums, too. From the moment I woke up, I had been hearing everything. From stolen whispers to hushed secrets, I knew every last thing being said in the building as we spoke. And I did not like it.

'Could you not shout? Just talk normally, I'll hear you.'

.

.

.

Hobie grabbed my arm and pulled me up and I landed on the balcony railing and stood straight. He helped me get down onto the ground. I stood there, still hyperventilating over whatever the hell just happened.

'Remind me never to come here again,' I breathed out, still trying to calm myself down.

'Oh, don't worry, I won't.' Hobie smiled.

I did a gigantic eye roll as I walked back inside.

'Are you going back to class?' He asked, leaning against the wall again.

'Yeah. Why?' I turned around to look at him.

He shoved his hands in his pockets and raised an eyebrow at me, as if he was asking me really? With his eyes.

I realized what he was indicating and shook my head vigorously.

'No, no, no. I've missed so much class already, I can't miss anymore.'

He looked to the right and glanced back at me with the same expression.

'I have to learn, Hobie. Not all of us can effortlessly get good grades – we have to work.'

He yawned and looked at his watch before staring at me again; even more skeptically than before.

'Oh my...'

Inside the building

'I can't believe I'm doing this.'

The halls were empty due to the ongoing classes, which I was very grateful for – I didn't need more people staring at me.

At the same time, though, I was supposed to be in those ongoing classes; not strolling around the school with the most notorious rulebreaker attending this academy.

'Well, start believing.' Hobie hummed next to me. He had a smile on his face, which irked me even more.

'Remind me why you're even doing this? What's in it for you?' I glared at him as he drummed up a nearby empty locker.

'Just looking out for my drummer, that's all.' He kicked a nearby can into the bin next to the wall.

'I won't be one for much longer if I'm not careful.' I muttered, recalling the previous day's events with a grimace.
