- Sabrina's Pov -"Tryouts Monday. Come on Sabrina! It'll give you an excuse to look at Billy." She elbows me while raising her eyebrows.
"Oh yes. My dream." I bluntly state as we make our way into my house. "And can you lower your voice, he only lives a couple blocks down."
She holds her hands up in defense. "You can't tell me that you don't think he's absolutely gorgeous. I mean-"
"Bethany!" I cut her off and give her a dirty look. "Doing your homework like the good student you are."
She gives me the most disgusted look. "Layla what'd you do to her?"
I drop the look as I open the fridge. "Fine, I won't compliment you again."
Layla laughs before taking a seat next to Bethany.
"Where's mom?"
"She went for a walk with one of her friends. I think Susan?"
"Haven't heard of her. Is she new?" Layla asks.
"I don't know, I've never heard of her either." I shrug while scanning for food. Eventually I just pulled out two apples. One for me and one for Layla.
I throw it to her and lean against the counter while biting into the fruit.
"I haven't heard any talk of someone new...wait." She pauses. "Didn't Billy just move here?"
I shake my head. "No, no. There's no way." I almost choke on my apple at the thought of my mom and Billy's mom walking together.
"It's fate!" Layla shouts.
"What's fate?" Bethany asks.
"Nothings fate." I snap. "Nothing is fate, Layla is crazy and delusional and and-"
"You're rambling~" She sings, holding her apple in the air. "You think he's cute and you have a little crush."
"Gag me with a spoon Layla! Ew!" I yell, mouth full.
I'm lying though. Yes I think he's attractive, but I'm trying to make a point here so I will never admit it. At least not yet.
"I'm confused." Bethany drops her head and groans.
"Stay confused." I point.
Layla winks at me. "Y'know. I kind of want to take a walk as well!" She hops and takes a bite of her apple.
"No."
"Got to get some exercise in before cheerleading tryouts. Let's go!" She stumbles in the kitchen and takes ahold of my arm.
"Bethany I'm being kidnapped!"
"Have fun Sabrina. You could use some sun."
Layla and Bethany burst out laughing as Layla opens the door. "Very funny!"
-
"This was a terrible idea.." I mumble as Layla practically skips in front of me.
She looks at each house as we pass them. Obviously I know what she's doing, what she's searching for. I keep thinking about the worst. What if he's outside and sees us? He already thinks I'm a stalker.
"JACKPOT!" She stops.
"Layla shh!"
"Blue Camaro." She rests her hands on her hips. "Suits him." She nods.
"Layla you've seen the house. He's not here. Let's GO!"
"Sabrina?"
No. No. No. No. I know that voice. That's my MOTHERS voice. I slowly turn around to see my mother next to a red haired woman who I'm assuming is Susan.
"What are you doing?" My mom asks.
Layla quickly joins my side. She's as tense as I am.
"We were going for a walk. Um, and then Layla saw this really nice car. She wanted to take a look at it." I quickly come up with a lie. "We were just looking for a couple seconds though."
The lady smiles and nods. "Yes. That's my stepsons car. Billy."
I almost faint right there. So this isn't his mom. This is his stepmom. Still, my mom can't be friends with her. What if they decide that they want us to meet each other. Or-
"Sabrina?"
"Yes?"
"I asked if you knew him. Susan's stepson." My mom says.
"Oh. Billy? Yes he's in a couple of my classes actually." Right as I say that I hear the door open. Now I'm frozen.
"There he is." Billy steps out, behind him a man close to Billy's height, maybe a bit taller steps out.
I glance at the two of them. My eyes land back on Billy and that's when I realize something. His face. He's forming a bruise on his cheekbone and his lip is cut.
I look at Susan who has a worried look on her face for about 2 seconds before brushing it off.
"Neil! Meet Molly!" She gestures over to my mom. "She's invited us over for dinner on Saturday."
I choke on literally nothing and so does Layla. Did I hear that correctly?
Billy looks at me. Furrowed brows. This is just fantastic. He gets to come to his 'stalkers' house for dinner.
"Oh that was nice of her." The man. Neil. Looks at me, I have a concerned look on my face.
"He tripped. Got a nasty bruise." He says to me, giving me a lazy smile.
I chuckle awkwardly. "Yeah..looks bad." I glance back over at him. It's getting dark so I can't tell if he's slightly shaking his head or not. Either way I don't believe Neil. Something in me is telling me that something's wrong.
"Well. We better get going. Don't want to hold you guys anymore." My mom says, looking at Layla and I.
"Yes! Sounds like a great idea. It was nice meeting you all." I smile and elbow Layla.
"Yep! Nice meeting you!" She says through her teeth.
We start walking. I let out a sigh of relief and so does Layla. My mom is a bit behind us so I decide to say something.
"What the hell Layla?" I mutter. "Dinner..?"
She shakes her head slightly. "Maybe it was just like one of those things moms do to be nice."
I sigh and look back at the house. Billy still stands, watching as we walk back. I can't read his expression for the life of me, usually I'm good at that.
"What are you looking at?" My mom asks me.
"Oh just taking one last look at the car." I let out an awkward chuckle and glance at Billy one last time before turning my head back around.
"I'm so screwed." I mutter under my breath.
