CHAPTER THIRTEEN : CHANGING PLANS
Hibiki Koritsu was here in the flesh.
And Kaori was in crisis mode.
Her emotions were already all over the place because Gojo stressed her out with how he revealed Itadori. But with the arrival of her brother? She didn't know whether to laugh or cry or just start screaming obscenities.
It only took twelve years but the two sole survivors of the Koritsu clan stood opposite each other. Twelve years of Hibiki ignoring her presence, twelve years of Kaori wishing for her brother to be back. All to manifest into this moment.
She watched as Hibiki and Utahime talked quietly for a minute before the two began to make their way to stand in line with the rest of the faculty. Hibiki hadn't even looked at her once, did he even know she was there?
As he was about to pass her, Kaori offered out an olive branch. "I like your hair." She complimented with a smile.
"Don't talk to me." Was all Hibiki replied.
The Tokyo team winced. The Kyoto team also winced. Hibiki hadn't just thrown away the olive branch, he'd burnt it and crumbled it into ashes. The Tokyo team looked to Kaori, slowly inching towards her and surrounding her so that she was obscured from anyone's view.
Kaori's lips were tight, boarding her biting them off and her eyes were emotionless yet guarded. It was like someone had just ripped her out of her brain and left nothing behind. Her fists were clenched tightly and Itadori was sure that she was probably going to have crescent marks in her palms whenever she stopped.
That's why, when he reached her side, he grabbed her hand and laced his fingers in between hers. In any other situation he'd be freaking out about him holding hands with a girl, but in this instance, her comfort – her being okay – was all he cared about.
Almost instantaneously, Kaori's fingers wound themselves around his. If Itadori didn't have the strength he did, his fingers might have been crushed. But because of his strength, he was able to peel Kaori's fingers away just a bit so they weren't hurting each other.
Whatever was happening inside her head, which was still a mystery to him, was clearly detaching her from reality and he wanted to try and keep her grounded for as long as possible.
"The Tokyo-Kyoto Sister School Exchange Event will be held over two days. The first day is a group battle: exorcism race. The rules are simple, the first team to exorcise the second grade cursed spirit released in the designated area wins. Several third grade and lower curse spirits have been released into the designated area as well. If a winner is not decided by sundown, then the team who exorcises the most, wins. There are absolutely no other rules. Of course, you're welcome to sabotage the others, but remember that you're all on the same side in the fight against the curses. This exchange event will allow you to learn about yourselves and your comrades through competition. Be certain at all times not to kill other competitors or needlessly injure them beyond recovery. That's it! You're all dismissed until the event commences at noon."
