Avoidances & Troubled Thoughts

Draco had been sitting stiff as a board across from the headmistress with his eyes glued to the clock, while jutting his knee up and down. Waiting. Waiting for this ridiculous, waste-of-time meeting to be over so he could return to his original plan which was to hunt down the witch who'd been avoiding him.

Don't get him wrong, Malfoy had actually missed the late night meetings he and McGonagall had shared in the past. It was, after all, one of the very few ways in which Draco was still able to feel normal. But, ever since she had involved the Ministry into his business, he had felt a bitter taste of disdain of wanting to speak to the former Transfiguration Professor at all.

Nonetheless, his mind had become vastly preoccupied with other important matters. Matters involving a certain little brunette.

Forty-eight hours had come and gone without a single, proper conversation with Hermione. Two days she had been brushing him off. Two days- too long. And with little to no explanation. Each time the Slytherin would attempt to pull her aside, Hermione would simply brush him off with an excuse.

" I really need to catch up on my school work ."

" Perhaps we can meet up later, I haven't gotten a lot of sleep lately ."

" Now's not the best time, I'm trying to spend more time with Ginny ."

Each and every excuse came with the same soft, passive tone of voice. It drove him mad to no end. But after everything that had happened between them over the last couple of weeks, Draco couldn't bring himself to heckle her. However, as the hours kept skipping by, Malfoy was on the verge of losing what little self-control he still possessed.

He needed to speak with her and find out why she was practically shunning him. His creature was growing restless. It needed the witch just as badly as Draco. Maybe worse.

Its claws were thrashing and slashing against the bars of its cage. Its fangs snapped and hissed. She's pushing us away! Why? Why is she pushing us away from her?

"I don't know," he grumbled to himself.

I can't bear it! It has to stop. Doesn't she realize that she's the only reason why life is even remotely bearable?

"Isn't that being a bit overly dramatic?" he asked.

His creature snapped and growled. No, it's not! Go stand in front of a mirror and tell me that you don't miss her! That the very essence of her being is what's keeping you from losing your sanity. Don't think that I can't feel the fire burning in your chest whenever you think about her. She's pushing us away and you need to find out why!

Draco's mouth pulled into a menacing sneer. A low growl rumbled in his chest. His beast was right. Hermione had been pushing him away and was refusing to give an explanation. Whatever this meeting consisted of needed to be over and done with. He'd had enough of being ignored and brushed to the side.

" Mr. Malfoy! "

He shot his head up to find McGonagall firmly staring at him with her arms crossed. Draco softened his features and nodded his head. "Sorry, Professor. Could you, please, repeat what it is that you were saying?"

Minerva sighed and tilted her head. "As I was saying, there has been recent developments involving your parents, Mr. Malfoy."

He straightened his stance as he was sitting and prompted her to continue. The last Draco had heard of his parents was that they were still both being detained by the Ministry. His guess was that they were trying to determine what course of action to take once they discovered the truth about his father's actual involvement with the war. He didn't doubt that the Ministry enforced the use of Veritaserum in order to acquire the whole truth of Lucius' situation.
