(YN's P.O.V)
She's safe... My job is almost over. I returned to the SUV. I planned to drive back to the hotel we were using as a base. Nima's probably at the airport by now and onboard Armando's cargo plane by now. They won't leave without me. My phone crackled with the comm channel reopening.
" Hey HomeRun. Everything good? I heard you skipped out on the chopper. " Yaz asked. " Yeah, I had to take care of something. " I replied while driving. " I'm on my way back to the hotel. You're still there, right? " No police cars or helicopters, great. I guess they've given up. " Yeah, we're packing our gear so meet us here. The girl's secure and our plane is waiting. " Yaz replied.
" Copy that. See you later. " I acknowledged. Yaz cut the channel. The trip back to the hotel took a good hour and a half. I kept around Dhaka's outskirts to avoid going back in. Once I got to the hotel, I parked and grabbed my phone. " Hey, Yaz. I'm parked near the back. Can't risk exposing myself so you'll have to find me. " I reported.
" Probably for the best. We're coming out. " Yaz agreed. I moved to the passenger side and waited for them to find me. They probably plotted out the fasted route to the airport before packing. Yaz and his partner found me a few minutes later. He knocked on the driver's side window. I greeted him and his partner with a nod before flipping the unlock button.
Yaz held two cases that contained the military laptops while the woman carried my duffel bag from Australia. " Thanks for the eyes you two. You can drive Yaz. " I said. " Sure. " He obliged and got in. " Another job well done. " His partner got in the seat behind him. I left the keys in the ignition for him. " Thanks for getting my bag. " I said to the woman.
" No problem sir. " She replied. I leaned against the car seat, sighing contently. Can't wait to get paid and go home. When we got back to the airport, Yaz's partner got out to get us clearance to drive on the railway. She returned with a runway crew member. He let her get back in the car before directing us to a gate on the runway and unlocking it.
We faced no further interruptions. Nima was waiting for me as we drove up the ramp into the plane. " Told you I'd be back. " I said. She embraced me and squeezed tightly. " I hate being here. I just wanted you to be with me. " Nima said against my chest. I returned the embrace with my left arm and ran my right through her hair.
" Don't worry, I'm here now. Let's get you home now. " I said in her ear. Nik was watching us. She looked at me with concern. Oh, I'm sure I know what she's thinking. I shook my head just as Nima let go. She turned to Nik and hugged her next. " Thank you again. I'm sorry about Saju. I know he had a family. " Nima said before sitting down and strapping in.
" It's not your fault. " Nik comforted. Armando entered the cargo bay and started strapping in the SUV. " Oh, you're back. What did you have to do? " He asked. " Had to pay respects. It's a long story. " I replied dismissively. No one questioned further. Yaz went up to Nik while his partner strapped in. " Another job well done. " He said with a smug grin.
" Another job well done. " Nik repeated. " It was a pleasure doing business with you, sis. " He said and offered his hand. Huh, they're siblings? Had no clue. " Sure it was, Yaz. " Nik agreed with a small smile. Uncharacteristically, she fist-bumped his open hand. Yaz chuckled and withdrew his hand. " Would've never guessed you two were siblings. " I commented.
" Yeah, I choose freelance work while she tied herself to The Entourage. " Yaz explained. " Cool. " I said. " We'll discuss your payment soon. " Nik assured. I nodded and sat next to Nima then took off my beanie and lowered my neck gaiter. The intercom buzzed as I was strapping myself in. " Alright, I've been cleared for takeoff so everyone strap in. " Armando said. " So Nima, what's the first thing you'll do when you get back? " I asked.
Nik and Armando strapped in on the other side. " Shower. No doubt I'm gonna spend an hour in there. " She replied. I chuckled. " Can't fault you there. I usually double-check my payment then shower. " The plane started to shake as we went for takeoff. Nima's hand brushed against mine. Against my better judgment... I intertwined our hands.
If she was experiencing Stockholm Syndrome before, I was only amplifying it now. I didn't have feelings for her, but what she just went through was too similar to me. In one a few days, she had been ripped from her normal life and thrust into my world with no parent to look after her. The difference being I choose this life, she didn't. Her innocent life... I had to preserve it. The turbulence began to subside.
" And we are in the air. 3 hours to Mumbai. " Armando said on the intercom. " You live in Mumbai? " I asked Nima. " Yeah, have you? " Nima replied. I shook my head. " I've been all over, but not there. " We didn't talk much for the rest of the flight. Nima scooted closer to me, resting her head on my shoulder. I... I'm going to break her heart soon. I closed my eyes and drifted to sleep alongside her. God would I kill to have my headphones right now.
The descending turbulence woke us up. No surprise there. " And here we are. Welcome home, kid. " Armando said happily on the intercom. After we landed, I unstrapped myself as Armando came into the cargo hold. " Well, it was a pleasure working with you. " He claimed. " Likewise. You'll have your payment by the end of today. " Nik assured. " Same goes for you, Yaz. " He smiled and shrugged.
Armando turned to me. The pilot reached into his pants and handed me a business card for A Shipping Service. " Ass? " I questioned with a chuckle. " Nobody believes a gag card. " Armando defended. " Make sure you burn it after you get the number down. I nodded and glanced at the card again before pocketing it. " I'm not getting off. Armando is flying me. " Yaz said to Nik.
" Alright then. Until next time. " She said. Armando unstrapped the SUV before returning to the cockpit. The cargo bay ramp came down. Nima and I got in the backseat while Nik took the wheel. It was late afternoon now. As we drove to her home, Nima looked outside with astonishment. It reminded me of fresh soldiers I'd sometimes be deployed with during missions. That look when arriving home from your last mission or tour.
I watched the city outside but most of the time, I was seeing how happy Nima was. When we got to Nima's house. Two of the guards outside opened the doors for us. " Wait, I want to talk with him alone. " Nima claimed. I could see Nik slightly furrow her brows from the rearview mirror. " Of course. " She agreed. " She replied hesitantly. The guards closed the doors and returned to their posts. Nima waited for Nik to enter the house before turning to me.
Oh no, please don't be what I'm thinking. " Is everything alright? " I asked. " Yeah, um. I'm way more than alright. " Nima assured with her face slightly flustered. " I was wondering if you wanted to come inside? You could finally relax. We could get cleaned up and have some dinner. " I looked ahead at the house and sighed.
Drug money really works wonders. " I'd like that. I really would Nima, but my job's over. You're safe now. " I looked at her and denied. Nima unbuckled her seatbelt and moved closer to me. " Please, (YN). In a couple of days, you've shown more care than anyone else. " Nima pleaded with teary eyes. " That has to mean something. " I turned my body and reached out with my right hand, cupping her face.
" It does mean something. It means you deserve more. Goodbye, Nima. Please, live the life we can't. " I said emotionally. For a moment, I caressed her cheek with my thumb. I withdrew my hand and got out the car. Nik was waiting right by the front door considering how fast she stepped outside. She walked up to the car and opened Nima's door.
Before helping a sobbing Nima out of the car, she looked at me and nodded in approval. Nima and I shared one last glance and turned away. I wore a weak smile as Nik held her and led her into the house. Guess that's my queue to leave. The guards opened the gate so I could walk out. I wanted to ask Nik about my payment but she has her hands full right now. This is a nice neighborhood. The hotels should be alright. Once I walked down the road path and got to the street, my phone beeped with a new message. Well, speaking of Nik.
Stay nearby. I have a plan to get your payment.
