REBELS HIDEOUT
7:45 PM LOCAL TIME

Zachary Zatara was never good at getting along with people his own age. It could not be blamed on his parents dying tragically in front of him because he was socially inept even before that. People may think that he is just a social butterfly. The parties he threw, the people he would hook up with and sometimes date, the jokes, and the casual flirting were all signs of someone no longer socially awkward. But if you really, really got to know Zachary Zatara, you would see what he truly was.

Scared.

Scared of being left like how his parents left him. Scared of being sober for long periods of time. He's relapsed so many times he has even lost count. Zachary Zatara was no one's best friend. He was no one's true love. He was an in-betweener, as he liked to call himself. You would date or hang out with him to get over someone or to get back at someone. People would date him in between their last break up and their next serious relationship. People would hang out with him because they heard he was trouble and wanted to prove to someone that they could do whatever they wanted.

In the nineteen years he had been alive, he had only seriously dated one person, a girl by the name of Lian Harper, who was much too good for him. Much too pretty, too smart, too generous.  With her, Zach was someone of value. Someone of importance.

But he wasn't dating Lian Harper anymore. He was back to being an in-betweener.

All this to say... Zachary Zatara made bad decisions. He made a bad decision by talking with Klarion the Witch Boy, again. They weren't friends, but they weren't enemies either. Zachary thought all the talk about him truly could not have been that bad. And to be honest, he liked how much it pissed his cousin Zatanna off. So when he had met the other young magician in a dark alley way he had expected to be attacked and almost mauled to death by his cat.

"There, all cleaned up," Superboy said, finishing wrapping the bandage around his head.

"So this Dreamstone..."

"The Materioptikon." Zatara corrected Robin.

"Whatever. It allows its wielder to see dreams and bring them into reality?" Robin said slowly.

He never really could understand magic. It was beyond his comprehension.

"Yeah, along with that, it has the ability to reshape reality itself. If the stone were to be used in a flawed manner, the fabric of space-time would be damaged, destroying all of existence." Zach stood up and walked around the room.

There was a silence in the hideout. The other young heroes grasped the sinister words that left his mouth.

"And Doctor Fate just had this stone... next to his coffee machine or what?" Superboy asked, trying to goat more information out of the older boy.
