The car suddenly stops and I almost slam my face with the deck (kids, this is why you wear seatbelts).
Max is next to me and he just stares at the wheel. Analizing what he'd just heard. He seems sad and a little angry but avove all: disappointed.
"What?" Max snickers at Alex.
"Monica here has been all night hooking up with guys." Alex repeats as if it was something casual.
I look at him with wide owl eyes. He's just laying on his seat, looking back at me and smirking (what I found sick) while Monica looked out the window, her face probably flushed.
"Alex...why do you do this?" Monica asks as if it wasn't the first time. "You always torture everyone around you".
Apparently Monica and Alex had more than just a hook up between them. Alex's eyes where on tornado of Monica's head now as she was still avoiding eye contact and looking out the window. He just looks at her numbly. He didn't have a particular expression on his face but you just felt some emmotion he had towards her in the glaze of his eyes.
"She never even mentioned the fact that she had a partner..." Alex adds as if the purpose was to break Max's heart. I've never been and much less broken up with someone so I could only imagine the pain.
I look at him.
It's not like I was mad at him for telling Max the truth, Max deserved to know. But to blurt it out so coldly?...And Max seemed to believe it. His expression told you what he was thinking: that there'd been signs of her unfaithfulness he'd decided to ignore.
With the car now parked Max turns and looks towards the backseat. Monica's looking down and she isn't daring to make eye contact with anyone. She DEFINEATLY didn't look that drunk and she knew it, she couldn't blame the alcohol for her unfaithfulness.
"Look at me in the eyes and tell me this isn't true" Max says. But he already knows that it is true. I don't see a hint of hope on his eyes but he wants to hear her say it.
Monica continues to look down and stays silent.
I could sense Max's heart breaking. I really didn't know what his attachment with this girl was but It seemed like it had been strong.
It looked like they had history... and Monica had just flushed it all down the toilet...
I couldn't imagine the humiliation he must feel having to deal with this with two strangers in his car.
"You know what?. Me and Alex are going to walk home. Max you are an amazing human being and I wish you the best of luck. I'll see ya" I say and give him a light smile.
Max nods, I understood he wanted to deal with this in private.
I got out the car and started walking fast. I could hear Alex shuffling out the car and mumbling a "Thanks." behind me.
We where still 40 minutes away from my house. I kept my fast pace because I really did not want to talk nor look at Alex. God, he couldn't have waited to tell him once we where like 25 minutes closer.
My legs where starting to hurt and this was only my 5th step but with all my earlier running and constant lack of exercise, I wasn't holding on strong.
The night was beautiful now; it was a full moon and a sky full of stars. The neighborhood was quiet and it felt safe.
Some houses still had lights on and other's where completley dark inside. I was jealous of the people who where already sleeping and in their comfortable beds.
I felt what was going to be a really loud yawn take over my body and I had to stop walking. I put my hand over my mouth and let out the biggest yawn a 17 year old girl could achieve.
