We descend the grand staircase of the throne room, our veils still concealing our faces. The silence in the vast hall is suffocating, broken only by the soft, echoing footsteps of the General leading us forward. Alina glances at him, her eyes flickering to the king and queen, who are seated in their imposing thrones, gazing down upon us with detached interest.

The room itself is a spectacle of opulence, a stark contrast to the cold stone of the Little Palace. The court members, draped in sparkling gowns and sharp, tailored jackets, stand like statues, their eyes trained on us. The Grisha have lined up in neat rows, flanking the aisle in their distinctive uniforms, their expressions unreadable. Every face turns to us as we approach the throne, their whispers barely audible but heavy with judgment and curiosity.

I feel the pressure of a thousand eyes on me. My palms are slick with sweat, and my heart races in my chest, each beat louder than the last. My fists clench at my sides, trying to quell the rising tide of anxiety. My breath quickens as we near the last set of stairs, where the king and queen await. The final step feels like the longest one I've ever taken, and when we finally stand before them, I feel small-smaller than ever before.

The king gestures to a servant, who approaches and takes our veils. Alina and I exchange a brief, uncertain glance before we both remove them, handing them over to the servant. I feel the weight of the silence in the room deepen as the veil is lifted.

A murmur ripples through the court, and I can feel the gazes of every court member searing into me. It's suffocating. I glance around quickly, spotting the four guards positioned a few feet behind us, their eyes just as focused on us. I swallow hard, trying to steady myself, but my thoughts are racing.

"I thought Irina would be taller," the king's voice cuts through the air, and I freeze, the words landing like a slap to the face. My mouth falls open in disbelief.

"And I thought the other girl was Shu," the queen adds, her tone casual but laced with an undercurrent of disdain. Alina and I exchange a glance, my heart sinking as the queen's words hang in the air. "Well, I guess she's Shu enough," she mutters dismissively, and my hands tremble with the urge to lash out, but I hold myself back, knowing better than to act on the sting of her words.

The General's eyes flicker between us, his expression unreadable. Alina looks down, visibly stunned by the queen's blatant racism, and I feel a hot surge of anger rising within me.

"Tell her... oh, I don't know... good morning," the queen asks the woman beside her, who steps forward to speak. But before she can get a word out, Alina cuts in, her voice firm and clear.

"I don't actually speak Shu, Your Highness."

I feel a swell of pride for her courage, and I squeeze her hand gently for support. She looks at me in surprise, and I offer her a tight-lipped smile before letting go of her hand. The queen's eyes narrow, her lips twisting into a sneer.
