Darkness covers me like a weighted blanket keeping me in place. I can hear the mummering of voice, but none of the words are clear enough for me to understand what is being said. All I can detect with certainty is the worry and concern behind the words.
The darkness will begin to clear only to cover me once again. I feel like I'm drowning and don't know which direction to go to resurface. Every so often I will feel a brush of lips across my forehead or a hand gripping my own. These along with the mummers keep me from slipping farther into the abyss.
Time continues to pass, but at what rate I couldn't tell you. Out of nowhere a light appears pulling me towards it. This must be the end and this must be the light people are always talking about. A deep sadness settles into my bones over never being able to see Lucan and Hunter again. Too not be able to watch Hunter grow into a man and start his own family. Too not be able to grow old with Lucan and welcome any other children we may have had. Too not be able to make more memories with the both of them and tell them how much I love them.
As I draw closer to the light a sterile smell tickles my nose and I can hear the distant sound of beeping. A body is pressed tight against my side and soft snores brush against my ear. I will my hand to move and thankfully it does. My touch is met with hair. Next a beeping sound penetrates my ear and I can feel the tubes that are connected to me.
My eyes flutter open, but the blinding light stuns me for a second forcing me to close them once again. A groan escapes from my lips and instantly a hand is placed in my own.
"Kinsley," I hear the voice sighs. "Kinsley," the voice says my name more firmly. "I think she is trying to wake up."
"I'll go get the doctor," a female voice says.
Where am I? How did I get here? Then all of my memories flood through my brain ending with Jake shooting me. I try to open my eyes, but once again the bright light blinds me.
"The light hurts," I rasp. After being in darkness for so long, the light was not a welcomed sight.
"Hang on," the voice tells me. "Tray, can you please get the light?"
Darkness is suddenly on the other side of my eyes. I try once again to open them and I'm met this time with success. My eyes flutter open and I take in the sight before me. Hunter is laying on the bed next to me with his arms wrapped tightly around me sleeping. Lucan was in a chair directly next to my bed. Tray and Ryder were sitting on the couch also sleeping.
I try to speak, but my throat is dry, and I can't form the words properly. "Water," I croak.
Lucan grabs a cup and brings the straw to my mouth. I take a big gulp and start coughing. "Easy, take small sips," Lucan directs. I resume drinking but take smaller sips this time.
I remove my lips from the straw and flop back onto the bed. "How mad at me are you?" I ask, wanting to get this argument over and done with.
Lucan sets the cup back on the table, leans in close to me, and takes my hand. He kisses the back of it. "At first, I was furious, but now I'm beyond grateful you are okay."
I study him for a moment waiting for him to yell at me and call me stupid for what I did, but all I see is relief in his eyes. "I think I would like it better if you yelled at me or something," I mutter.
Lucan chuckles and kisses my knuckles. "I'm sure Aubree and Skylar will have a few choice words for you. As well as Hunter."
"I'd rather you yell at me than Aubree," I tell him earning a smile. I go to move but a twinge of pain radiates from my stomach region.
Lucan sees my grimace of pain. "Easy Kinsley. You were shot remember."
"I remember," I tell him leaning back on the bed and closing my eyes.
