AN: This is Electra Lux Martin (but with curly hair!). Enjoy the chapter!
I was awoken by the harsh sunrise the next morning. I must have fallen asleep in the car at some point last night. I looked around at our surroundings and it looks like we pulled over to the side of a country road. The car was surrounded by full trees which would have block anyone's prying eyes. I slumped back down in my seat, knowing that we were safe for now.
Soft snoring broke me from my muddled thoughts and I glanced at Day. He had the chair leaned back as far as possible and it looked painful for him in the position he was in. He tried to sleep on his side so that he was facing me, but he had his arm trapped underneath his mountain like body. His arm probably has no feeling by now.
I sat back on my seat and mulled over our 'little' situation. On the run with 40 hours, give or take a few, left on the clock until Count Suckula comes crashing after us. I think my mom and Day's family will be safe, but I can't be positively sure. Now what? Do we try to stay hidden, or go to the Lab itself? And if we do go there, what do we do?! The questions and worrisome thoughts floated around in my head until they got all gumbled up. I need air. Now.
Quickly but silently, I slithered out of the car and went to a sturdy looking tree not to far ahead. I knew that if I went to far, Day will have my head for disappearing on him. I swung myself up on the lowest branch that was a few inches above my chest and started to climb.
Once I reached as close to the top I could get, I gazed upon the many branches of trees. My mind finally calmed down and I just listened. The branches creaked and the leaves brushed together in the wind. Birds were singing their tiny hearts out without a care in the world. And of course something, or should I say someone, disrupted me.
"Electra where are you?!" Days voice broke through the tree top. It sounded like an elephant was taking a stroll in a china shop.
He stopped right underneath me and I reached and grabbed a walnut. Luck has it as I am sitting in a spot where there is no obstacles in my way of the walnut and a very unlucky Day. I dropped it and I heard a thump and a very loud "Ow!".
I snickered and his head snapped up to look at the source of laughter. In a flash he is up with me on the branch.
"Um, Day? As much as I appreciate you being here with me on this branch, I don't think this branch can handle your weight" I smirked.
He looked at me in amusement and put his hand over his t-shirt covered heart, "Are you calling me fat Electra?"
Trying to keep a straight face, I said as serious as I can. "Just stating a fact."
Launching at me with while laughing, he said, "Well I'm not the one-" he stopped in mid-sentence hearing the loud snap of the branch breaking.
The branch started to dip and everything happened in slow motion.
My stomach flew to my throat as the branch vanished from underneath me. Day, who was closest to the tree trunk, wrapped one arm around the rough bark and yanked me from midair with his other. He swung me around and before I could draw in a breath, I was face to face with the insect ridden tree trunk. I yelped and put both of my arms in front of me and grabbed on to it like it was my life line.
In the distance, we heard a loud thump of the branch landing on the ground beneath us. All I could hear now was the ragged breaths I was taking and the roar off heart beat in my ears.
"Well", I said in a slightly trembling voice, "that's gotta tell you that you need to go on a diet."
Day lightly put his head in the tree and laughed.
