Nico’s Pov:
They just left her there. That's it. Nico had caught up to Jason, Percy and August, just as they were about to walk into a carven. And what they found shocked them to the core.
Laying against the wall was Maree, covered in cut and dirt, her shirt in tatters. All of the monster were gone but the others had arrived there fast enough for them not to do anything serious to her. But that's not why they were frozen.
Coming out from her shoulders and covering most of her body was the most beautiful wings Nico had ever seen. They looked like angel wings from the pictures and were a mix of black and white. And they were massive.
Nico broke out of his trance and rushed over to the angel. Her eyelids fluttered open when Nico’s cold hands touched her cheek. "I-I lost control a-again," she whispered, so softly, Nico could barely hear.
He shook his head. "They're gone but something happened to you," he said, lightly brushing one of the wings.
She shivered. "I don't know how I got them but they just sprang out when the monster threw me into the wall."
The sound of running feet made Nico whip his head around to the doorway. It was just Will and the others, who had caught up.
Hazel gave out a cry and rushed towards her bruised sister. "Holy Hera, what happened!?" she gasped, grabbing Maree's hand.
Maree coughed. "Will, can I have some ambrosia?"
Will rushed over, sat next to Nico and fed Maree some ambrosia and nectar from a canteen. Nico did his best to ignore the burst of electricity he felt every time Will accidentally brushed him.
Maree's wounds slowly faded and soon, she was strong enough to sit up. Annabeth walked over and sat next to Maree. "How you feeling?" she asked.
"Better. But I need a new top," replied Maree, earning a few laughs from the others and the tension lifted off the group.
Annabeth smiled and grabbed a camp halfblood shirt from her bag and offered it to Maree who took off her tattered shirt and slid the new one one. Her wings were poking out against the fabric and the bottom half hanged out from underneath but thankfully they didn't tear the shirt.
The group helped her up and then checked their surroundings. "So, now what?" asked Frank.
A massive bang interrupted their silence and with a look of agreement, the group ran down the hallway they heard it come from. What they found suprised them.
Standing in the middle of the ancient carvern was a man. Dark hair, and what seemed to be casualish clothes hanged off his body. He looked up at the teenagers and smiled, eyes red.
Maree immediately reacted, pushing everyone out of the way and grabbing her dagger and charged towards the man. She jumped on his back and screamed towards the others. "RUN!"
August immediately understood what she was doing and started pushing the others out the door.
"Are we seriously going to leave her there!?" cried Percy.
"Yes!" August shouted. "Don't you get it. That's the darkness we were suppose to find. The first leaf must have fallen, she's sacrificing herself for us, now we must leave!"
August managed to get everyone through the door until it was just Nico and Will left. "Maree!" Nico cried and he tried running to his sister before getting tackled by Will. "What are you doing! Let me go!" he roared.
"No!" Will shot back. "She's sacrificing herself for you so you can be happy. The team can't loose you! I can't loose you!" Tears were streaming down his face. "I know you love her but you have to let her be the hero. It's her quest!"
Nico fell silent, looking at the boy onto of him. Blue eyes met his dark ones, the golden hair shone in the light. It was then Nico realised he deeply cared for this boy.
"I don't want her to die," he whispered.
"She won't. You can feel it. We'll find her again, I promise," said Will.
Helping Nico to his feet, the two looked one last time at the angel who was fighting the monster. "Goodbye, sister..." whispered Nico and with tears falling down his eyes, the two turned around and ran through the door towards the others.
Maree's Pov:
Maree watched as her brother and Will left. She smiled to herself. They would make a cute couple.
She turned her attention to the monster she was fighting. He was the reason why she didn't have a normal life. He was the reason why she had to leave her friends. He was the reason why she didn't get a happily ever after. Chaos.
Letting her newly found wings break free, she seized the lord before her and let her body fly them off the ground. There she concentrated every power, every blessing she ever had on the man. She shone brighter and brighter.
"Goodbye..." she whispered and with a bright flash, she was gone.
