"Wow, you really are unbelievable." I sighed and went to trot back to my room.
"No." My mum put a hand on my back. "We'll support you. We need to have a girl chat." Oh, God!
There was an uncomfortable atmosphere of silence. You could cut it with a knife, quite literally, if you had the imagination. Mum was interrogating me about the boy - I wasn't, I was determined not to get him into any kind of trouble. I love him. That's all.
"So.... Is he, cute? Sporty?" She inched closer to me. "Hot?"
I guffawed and then melodramatically gasped. "Ah, mom! Really, don't you have anything .. better to say?" I laughed to cut the imminent, impending silence.
Within thirty seconds, she got to the door and walked away. "No, mom.."
"No, darling. I know when I'm not wanted." She sighed and looked at the floor.
Why does my gut have to be so God-damned remorseful? I felt like saying sorry, apologising, but I couldn't bring myself to.
