"mommy! can my friend come over!" onika dashed into her living room. she was just getting off of her school bus, ecstatic to tell her mother about the new friend she made throughout the school week. it was friday, and she knew she'd have a better chance at a sleepover today than any other day."girl, if you don't slow down with that running in my house!" her mother, carol, scolded her but quickly softened her tone to speak.
"who is your friend, onika? where do they live? who are their parents?" the questions flew out of her mouth.
onika thought. she didn't get that far with her plan. "um- her name is beyoncé! and she lives down the street! the big blue house! and- and- i don't know her parents. sorry, mommy." the ten year old sat down.
the child's mother thought about it. she didn't want her daughter to feel like she couldn't have fun, but for safety reasons, she decided on saying no.
"well, not tonight, baby. i want to meet this young lady and her parents. i don't want just some stranger in my house." she explained her reasoning, still receiving a pout.
"but it's friday, mommy! no school and no stuff to do! please?" she begged.
it was hard to say no to her daughter. her only daughter at that. so you could only imagine how spoiled the girl must be. especially when she's in the presence of her father.
the woman sighed. "fine, give me a few minutes and show me to your friend's house."
onika jumped up and squealed. "thank you, mommy! you're the best mommy!" she smiled wide, taking her book bag to her bedroom.
onika waited patiently for her mother to be ready. once she was, onika took her hand and walked with her down the street. just like onika said, beyoncé lived in the big blue house. her home sat only a few houses down. when onika found out, she was so excited. all the playdates and sleepovers they could have together made her feel like she could fly.
onika looked at her mother. "right here, mommy! this is beyoncés house!" she cheesed. onika walked up to the door and knocked.
on the inside, beyoncé's mother, tina, heard the knocks. they rarely got visits so her mother was confused as to who'd be at the door.
"giselle! go get my bat!" she yelled throughout the house.
"coming, momma!" beyoncé went into the hall closet, retrieving the weapon before giving it to her mom. beyoncé ducked off to the side so she wasn't in the way but she could still see.
beyoncé's mom opened the door with the bat in the air. "who in the hell is at my door?!" the older woman yelled. the yelling startled onika and carol.
"is beyoncé here?" onika asked, completely ignoring the fact that there was a bat moments away from hitting her and her mother.
beyoncé heard the familiar voice and gasped. "onika?!"
the child got up and ran to the door. the children hugged each other tightly. the interaction they shared warmed their mother's hearts. tina put down her bat.
"i am so sorry, but you know there are crazies out here. i didn't know who it could be at my door." tina apologized to carol, receiving an understanding look.
"don't you worry. i would've done the same thing!" she chuckled.
"see, mommy? i told you she lived here! so can we play?!" onika begged.
"yeah! can we momma?" beyoncé begged too, grabbing her mother's sleeve.
the mothers shared a look that only mothers could understand. it was a knowing look, a confirmation.
"yes." the two women granted their children. without another word, the children dashed off to beyoncé's room.
"no running in the house!" tina and carol yelled in unison.
"sorry!" the girls yelled back, still not slowing down.
as the children played, the mothers bonded. it was nice to have another mom in the neighborhood you could relate too. it seemed like a blessing that the two girls met in class.
