Morning Harvest

The next day, I was woken up early, since the harvest was ready for picking. Normally I would be pretty groggy in this situation, but right now I had more important things at hand. After picking out the carrots, cauliflower, lettuce, and tomato, we stocked our pantry and went to sell the rest at the farmer's market. I had the lamest job you could ever name. I had to hold out some vegetables and get other people to come and buy our items. "Come on over, buy our juicy, scrumptious," Ugh. "Nutritious, tomatoes." That's it. I have to advertise tomatoes. Soon I was bored, and I took a bite out of the tomato I was holding. I was chewing it and looking around when the same nosy kid from earlier came over. Not again... "Hey. How good are those tomatoes you got there?" Oh. It's another guy. Guess not. "They're real good. You want ketchup? You got it." I took another bite as the kid examined the stash. "How much are they?" He asked. "A buck fifty per pound. Any offers?" He thought for a moment. "I'll take a sack." Then he reached for some money while I went to grab a sack to fill with tomatoes. I weighed it then added up the funds. "Uh, I think it's about seven dollars." He just gave me the money and left. I grabbed some grain to chew on, then adjusted my overalls. "Hey, when's this thing gonna end?" I asked Jerald. "Shh," he said. Jerald went over to see the other items on carts. Lucky. He got to freely look around, since he was the youngest. Not much later he came back, holding some blue fruit. "Hey! Taste this!" He shoved the fruit in my mouth. "Bro, you can't be going around--" I swallowed it. "What... is this?" He smiled. "I snagged a couple seaberries from the other cart. Sweet, huh?" But I was surprised. "You can't be going around and stealing things! That's not okay. You don't know how much trouble you could get into if you get caught." I said. "Yeah, yeah. But they were good, right?" I nodded. Then we sold some more and Mom gave me and Jerald a few bucks. "We had a good day today. Don't go and spend it all in one place! I'll be back later. You two boys go and see the other carts." And with that, she left. "Say, Jerald. Where did you say you got those seaberries?" I ask him. He looked at me and led me to a cart. The man who ran the place was asleep, and a sign in front of him read, "WAKE UP IF INTERESTED IN BUYING." But I wasn't interested in the big man in the chair. I had my eyes on the juicy blue berries that he had in a basket right next to him. I reached to grab one until someone saw us. "HEY! STOP THOSE KIDS!" Everyone turned to see us. We were getting a lot of looks. Unfortunately, the man woke up right there and then. But the whole time I had my hand outstretched to get the berry. The man arose from his chair and boomed. "YOU DARE STEAL MY BERRIES?! HAVE AT YOU!" He grabbed me by my head and hat, and lifted me off the ground. "Do you know what happens to the bad boys who try to steal?" Just then I heard a voice below me. "Hey." It was Jerald. "Put my brother down." The man looked at Jerald. He looked pretty defiant. "Ah, lookie here! The shortstack's older brother came to save the day!" I bit the man's arm and he screamed. "YOOWWCCHH!!" He instantly dropped me and started rubbing his hand. It started to take a reddish hue. Me and Jerald took as many seaberries our shirts could hold and started running into the forest. Immediately all the people started chasing us, and we ran until we lost them. Unluckily for us we lost ourselves, too. Well, at least we have these delicious berries, I thought. "Hey, Jerald. I think that we should start heading back home. Mom's gonna start worryin'." Jerald agreed and he helped me up a tree so we could find our way back. Our clothes were sweaty, and our shoes were muddy. My hat was fine, though. Quickly we went upstairs before Mom noticed us. After changing our clothes, Mom told us she had a surprise. She led us to the living room, where there was a box with holes poked in it. "Go ahead! Open it." So we did. Then a dog came out and started to lick my face. The dog was white and had black ears and spots. "Hey! Easy!" I laughed. Jerald is surprised. "You got him a dog? What about me?" Mom laughed. "It's for both of you, silly. Now go outside and play! Show your new companion some tricks!" So we did. While we were outside, dark clouds came in, and soon there was a storm. We brought Max (the new dog) inside and wrapped him in a towel. "Tomorrow, we should build him a doghouse!" I said. Jerald peeked out of the curtains. The wind was pretty strong. "Good thing that we sold the crops before the storm came," Mom said. I rubbed Max's head. Today had been a good day.
