"Gabriel?!!? What are you doing here??" I asked as he dropped his abomination of papers and binders on his desk. "I just transferred. The other school couldn't handle my 'outrageous foot odor.' Uh, and also it's Gabe. Gabriel is too fancy, you know?" He grabbed a toothpick from his overall pocket (who knows how long it's been in there) and started picking his teeth with it. "That chicken was rogue," he mumbled to himself. I tried not to pay attention to him, but sometimes he would get distracting. But eventually I got out of the class, but he caught up with me. His notebooks weighed him down, so I had to wait for him. When he finally came, he was panting and tired. "I see you walk home alone a lot. The route through your house, do you pass through a cornfield?"
"Uh, I wouldn't say through, but I go along it," I said. But he just sighed. "Haven't you heard the legend of the corn boy?"
"Uh, nooo. Why would I want to hear about some corn boy?"
"Trust me. You wanna know. So listen. There was this boy, who went by the name of Jackson Alexander. They say one day, he got lost. Hungry and alone, Jack tried to find a way back home. But first, he had to find something to eat. Then whoa! His eyes locked onto a cornfield. It had the biggest corn stalks he had ever seen. Without hesitation, he grabbed one and started eating it. But little did he know that 'the one sketchy guy' lived on that farm. So they lured him inside. Rumor says he never came back out, and ever since, nobody bought any corn or went to that farm again.......say! You should come to my house sometime! Mysteries and missing posters are like, my thing."
Again? First Jane, now Gabe. What is wrong with me and 'coming over' that makes me mad? I really didn't know, because his uncle might have still been sore over the "seaberry" thing. I just shrugged and continued to walk.
The whole way to our lockers Gabe and I talked. "So, you never told me. Why did you go to your cousin Jane's house?" I asked as we continued walking. "Uh, my mom left us, and my dad didn't want to be with me anymore, so I really had no place to go. So I came over to where Jane lives now, and they took me in. And the rest, as they say, is history." He shrugged. "I'm sorry, about that."
"Eh, I don't really think about it anymore. The whole parent thing is in my past. Thinking about it just puts me in a bad mood, so I try my best not to."
"Oh, cool. Also, why do you go barefoot everywhere? Don't your feet hurt?" I had so many questions to ask him. "I would love to tell you. Trust me. But I kinda forgot it, so I need you to come over so you can see the full thing."
"Uh huh," I responded with a huff. " He looked at me. I could do it. Gabe looked pretty confident. "Sooo, is that a yes?"
"I'll think about it. Work is kinda heavy, y'know?" He scoffed. "Yeah. Tell me about it. But don't worry. I'll be waiting."
"Sure, no problem."
I could've sworn I heard a small victory from him when I left.
