Quietly we proceeded towards the living room. In fact, we were so quiet, the only thing hearable was the pitter-patter of the rain on the windows. There was a bunch of thunder outside. I slowly took off my hood. "I think it's clear now. Come to think of it, I don't even know why we were being quiet in the first place. Gabe went to the kitchen. "What are you doing?" I seethed. No answer came back, only some crinkling. Soon he came back with his hands full of chips and snack buns. "I figured you guys might be hungry. Here." Confusingly, I snatched a bun from his hands and consumed it quickly. "Now that we're actually in the place, let's go downstairs. That is, if there is one. We split up and Jerald searched every room. "Hey, I found it!" Jerald was pointing to a funky shaped door that had a big window.....with a set of stairs leading downwards on the other side. I jiggled the doorknob. It didn't budge. "So you're telling me, this guy keeps his inside doors locked. Well, that's pretty convenient!" I said sarcastically. Gabe was about to smash a chair on the door until I stopped him. "Simply just get a toothpick and pick the...." I stopped in my tracks.
"Do you guys hear that sound?" A small beeping one. "What, the beeping? Think so." Jerald got a few feet closer. He moved a small cloth, and under it there was a box that contained a red sensor. "So he really keeps his valuables down there." We had to delay the mission. But not because of the sensor. The wind picked up speed, and the farmer's market had to be canceled. Why do we know this, you ask? Gabe turned on the radio. "Man. It's a real storm out there. It's best we go back before the kid comes." Right then there was a SKKKRRRTT outside. We all hurried out the window. There was no way we could stay.
Suddenly, a huge gust of wind came by. I jump out before it could knock me down. "Gah! This is tornado weather." We scurried away. It was already getting dark, and I was only thinking about eating for some reason. The man went by and we did too. We quickly split up and we were already home when I realized that I had forgotten my hat. "JERALD! Where is my hat?!!?" He looked around, startled. "I think the strong winds knocked it off, and even if it did, it's too late to go back." I rubbed my wet hair. It wasn't everyday that I didn't wear my hat. It was the ONLY thing that was left of Dad. Besides the notebook, this was special. The hat was part of him. And part of me, too. I needed to go back. But right now I had to focus on my schoolwork. That doesn't mean that I won't go back. I was getting ready for bed, and I had to till the dirt again. Life's not very easy when you're a farmer. I meant to get something before going to sleep, but I was tired from school and the failed mission. So getting some shut-eye sounded about the best thing about now.
NEXT MORNING
I twitched. A small dripping sound echoed in the other room. "What is that?" I hop off my bed and go to check it out. Mom was on a ladder with a roll of tape in one hand. "The storm last night really did it to the roof, now we need some new tiles. Later I'll have to pass by the store to get a can of that plastic cement.
